I'm trying to use the Genie to check and possibly upgrade the firmware on my AC1900/A7000 WiFi USB Adapter. I have the latest version of the genie, and when I hit "check for update" it gets to 20% every time and just stops. I've let it set for an hour, and it never moves. It always stalls at 20%, have uninstalled and reinstalled several times, and issue keeps happening. I believe I have firmware in need of upgrade, but don't know how else to do it. Tech support didn't seem to understand the issue or wasn't too interested in it, so I have no alternative. Has anyone else experienced this, and how did you fix it?

Had been using my router as an access point and I don't think option to upgrade firmware was even available - or maybe I just never loggin to to see if it was. Anyway, I just reset the router to regular use and saw an upgrade was available. I did the upgrade and can connect to the internet, my network, etc. just finr. However, I cannot control the router using either the Netgear Genie on my tablet or logging is at 192.168.1.1, www.routerlogin.net, etc.

Thanks for posting, as I am having exactly the same problem, just factory reset my router, firmware upgrade, now genie will not let me in on admin/password. Netgear, let me know how to rollback to a previous firmware so I can login!

I'm afraid I don't. I bought the router on January 23, 2014 from Amazon and would have upgraded the firmware when I set it up if there was something newer at the time than what it shipped with. I didn't check for new firmware from then until last weekend. And I would have upgraded to whatever was current last weekend (which I assume still is). I know the changelog it said there were 2 security issues fixed, among a few other fixes.

Note: Please make sure that you are using the latest NETGEAR genie software on your computer. This steps are only applicable if you are using a router that is supported or compatible with the NETGEAR genie software. Please visit for the list of the supported routers. You can download the latest NETGEAR genie software on this

New Purchase. Had a Nighthawk I never had issues with which is the reason I bought this....off to a rocky start with this one. No Option to update firmware in either the webclient (Advanced>admin) or Nighthawk (Router Settings) app

This page contains two links for the Windows and he macOS versions - both point to updates1.netgear.com. This is hosted on the Akamai global distribution network, the host you talk to is selected depending on your location, and the server(s) load.

The link above ... -install.exe?cid=wmt_netgear_organic ... would be correct. Might happen there is a problem with the feeds and updates within this network - not much the community members can do here. You could check the IP your WIndows system does (most likely) talk to:

I had this modem/router stored away for a couple years. I pulled it back out when I moved recently and it periodically drops the internet several times a day. I figured maybe it is that the firmware that needs to be updated but I don't see anywhere on the Netgear genie where I can update the firmware. I downloaded the nighthawk app which redirected me to the routerlogin screen/Netgear genie because it said my firmware is outdated.

Can someone let me know if there is a way for me to update the firmware within netgear genie or if this is something that WOW needs to update on their end? I attached a screenshot of what the netgear genie screen looks like.

I always receive Firmware is invalid (update via Genie) or This firmware file is incorrect! Please get the firmware file again and make sure it is the correct firmware for this product. (using FW upload). Anyone who can help me update my router. by the way I tried this using IE en Edgen on Win10 PC, Safari on Mac and Firefox and Chrome on Mac.

I just want to update my running firmware (V1.0.9.12_1.2.23) to the latest version (1.0.9.18_1.2.27) on my R7000. Quite a simple process normally and I have a lot of experience with routers and networks.

However when updating by downloading the file from netgear and uploading it via the router update firmware screen I always receive the error This firmware file is incorrect! Please get the firmware file again and make sure it is the correct firmware for this product. Also with any other firmware version for the R7000.

I am looking for someone who can give a clue why every firmware chk file from the Netgerar R7000 downloads gives above errors. I yesterday also tried with a factory-to-dd-wrt image, resulting in the same problem. The Genie web page accepts no firmware file, not even the one it downloads itself.

> [...] Unzipped the file and uploaded the chk file from the zip. [...]

It's normally hard to get a corrupt file (without a complaint) from a
zip archive, and even harder from multiple zip archives. If the router
rejects Netgear firmware files and third-party firmware files, then it
seems more likely that the router's little brain has been scrambled than
that all the firmware files in the world are corrupt.

If the web-interface load procedure fails, then you might try using
the (last-ditch) TFTP scheme, which might take a different enough path
through the software to give a different result. It's also possible
that the router has a hardware problem (bad NVRAM). I've never tried

When attempting to update my firmware (V1.0.3.4_1.1.2) to the latest firmware 1.0.4.68_10.1.75 the download fails. I have tried to update the firmware via the latest Genie app on my PC and also via the iOS app on my iphone. The Genie shows that everything is good and the router is working properly. I have tried reboot, checked if local access is enabled, etc. I'm at a loss. Any ideas and thoughts?? Thanks

A few days ago I tried to update the router with the new firmware (1.4.1.68), I don't remember my previous version. The update failed and while everything seemed ok at first (network traffic didn't appear to be affected). I couldn't connect to the router using either the app or the IP on a desktop. Now 3 days later, everything has gotten progressively worse and now it will only connect to websites sometimes, but will usually time out.

Did you reset the router to factory settings after the firmware flash?

New firmware sometimes introduces changes that are not compatible with the old configuration.

So while it isn't guaranteed to fix problems a factory reset is the first thing to try if you have issues with new firmware.

You can reduce the hassle of reconfiguring all those settings by creating a backup of your settings before you reset. Then if something is still broken after the reset, and the new firmware has not fixed it, you can restore the device to its pre-reset state.

After spending several hours I am reaching out to the community for help. I have a solid wifi connection but my speed is slow. The firmware needs updating for my C7000v2 (3 years old). The current firmware version I have is v1.02.04 and the updated version is v1.03.01

The app sends me to routerlogin.net. After entering this Netgear genie location there is no place to download the firmware. I have watched videos and read the discussion board and cannot find where to download the firmware.

I have owned an R7800 Nighthawk X4S router for about a year with no issues whatsoever. About a month ago, I updated my R7800 Nighthawk X4S router to firmware version V1.0.2.60 and immediately noticed, upon the router coming back online following the firmware update, that none of my family's devices are able to connect to either the 5GHz or 2.4GHz band.

I need expert assistance please. My ISP will not update my C3000 because it is my private cable modem. My attempts at updating through Netgear Genie have failed with the following message: "Router Firmware Check Completed. Failed to get firmware version information."

Grateful if someone could tell me another method for updating my router. What sense does it make to by a Netgear product if the firmware cannot be readily updated when there are security risks discovered?

I am having the same issue. Wanted to do a firmware upgrade due to a separate issue of trying update a raspberry pi on my network, and it seems to be causing the router to go unresponsive and forces me to reboot it. Router firmware version is V2.02.08, and using the Netgear Genie firmware update option says the same thing, "Router Firmware Check Completed. Failed to get firmware version information."

I'm in the same boat. My router is at firmware version V1.01.11. The latest is V2.02.08. I own my modem/router; so my ISP (CableOne) does not update my firmware. Why won't netgear let me update the firmware on MY router?

I need direct expert assistance. My ISP (WOW) does NOT and will NOT update my C3000 because it is my private cable modem. My attempts at updating through Netgear Genie have failed with the following message: "Router Firmware Check Completed. Failed to get firmware version information."

CAN ANYONE show/tell/direct me (perhaps another method) for updating my router. It's NONSENSE that Netgear creates a product and then NOT support firmware improvements and IGNORES the fact some ISPs DO NOT 'PUSH' its patches and are NOT directly acquirable NOR readily updated when there are security risks -- known-or-undiscovered.

@dwilson6936 Apple would be in the same boat. Its part of the docsis spec. The modem side is controlled by the isp. The older modem/router combo devices are all this way. And not just from netgear. Its an industry wide spec/issue.
