The biggest difference between the Ccleaner program and the Ccleaner slim version is that the slim version does not install the toolbar that the full Ccleaner has. The slim version has many of the larger program's features, which also includes the ability to clean your registry, which may be littered with files from apps and programs that you have long uninstalled. The software stands alone on your system and doesn't require internet access or for you to log in. Plus, most of its cleaning tools and functions are self-explanatory. The cleaning program is also far faster than its closest competitors.
Virus and malware manufacturers will often add files to your computer one piece at a time. If you frequently clean your computer with something such as the Ccleaner slim program, then it is harder for viruses and malware programs to slowly infest your computer. In addition, the removal of older files and temp files may help your computer run a little quicker, and may even help reduce loading times and app freezes.
Hi, I looked in the files before asking and didn't see anything. When I ran the ccleaner download thru virus total mcafee hits it and says has artemus virus. Same occurs using the slim download. I don't feel safe to install on system. Is this going to be fixed? Thank you so much.
Hi. Thank you for writing. I don't have any anti virus on my pc but I have never installed any programs that come back from virus total like that, If there is any issue on virus total with a program, I don't think it's a good idea to install it. In my experience with using Virus Total; sometimes programs will come back like this, and I report it and then the issue is gone. I would never feel safe as I don't understand software enough and every program I use on my computer has always been clean. If there is nothing to fix, then I guess I have to find another product. I've used ccleaner for a very long time and so will miss using it. I'm sure I just don't understand false positives, but have seen programs with this before and it is always fixed so that it doesn't happen on virus total like that and then I install it. I appreciate your response.
Just an FYI that I was testing the 32-bit version of CCleaner Portable v5.59.7230 (i.e., after I upzipped the Portable build ccsetup559.zip on my USB thumb drive and tried to launch the 32-bit ccleaner.exe executable). My ccleaner.exe executable is also Untrusted by Norton and I have to explicitly allow this file to launch and then access my Norton Smart Firewall to prevent execution from being blocked. I don't know if it's relevant, but my v5.59 executable came bundle with a beta version of the Software Updater feature (signified by a yellow dot on the Tools panel).
My case is slightly different from yours but both our problems are likely related to the fact that our executables are Untrusted by Norton. You had a problem launching the v5.59 slim installer ccsetup559_slim.exe and Norton flagged your installer as having an invalid signature. In my case the problem is with the 32-bit program executable ccleaner.exe that launches the interface, and my Norton Smart Firewall block is triggered by suspicious activity.
VirusTotal reports my 32-bit ccleaner.exe v5.59 is clean (0/69 detection - see the report at ) and Symantec is listed as one of the AV engines used to scan the file, so in my case it appears to be a heuristic (behavior-based) problem or issue with the poor reputation in the wider Norton community and not because the SHA256 hash hasn't been whitelisted yet.
My Norton Smart Firewall block isn't new to CCleaner v5.59, at least with the Norton Security v22.15.2.22 (the legacy version for Win XP and Vista) I use. I tested the previous CCleaner Portable v5.58.7209 and the screenshot I posted back on 17-Jun-2019 in the Norton Tech Outpost shows the 32-bit ccleaner.exe v5.58 executable triggers a similar "suspicious online activity" block with my Norton Smart Firewall.
Latest version ccleaner freeware detected by my Zemana anti virus as virus, and also 3 separate antivirus software manufacturers on Virus Total incl ESET today. Tried downloading again--same result. Last version OK and i re-installed that.
Shouldn't you take this a bit more seriously? Have you downloaded the std download--as i did --freeware- and tested it with Virus Total? After all there has been a major problem with ccleaner malware downloading not all that long ago (2017)? The std freeware download does nt offer a 'slim' version and i have never heard of such a thing! Where is it on your downloads page?
Yes thanks the 'slim' version doesn't trigger either zemana or virus total--so i presume virus free. May i ask what it is that's triggering the problem in the full version? I haven't noticed any toolbars.
How many times I have blogged about 'ccleaner absurdities'? The malware incidendt. The PUP incident. The security night mare. The telemetry thing. The unwanted auto-update thing. Does it need more incidents to lose trust?
