Bertha Alice Tilton Hubalek

Bertha Alice Hubalek was born on October 30, 1904 to Elmer J. Tilton
and Clara (Austen) Tilton, Collyer, Kansas. She died Monday, March 2,
1987 at the Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital, WaKeeney, Kansas.
She was 82 years of age.
She married Henry Ehrichs on May 12, 1926. He died on August 17,
1936. Two children were born to this union, Ross H Ehrichs and
Henrietta Moden.
On August 6, 1939, Bertha married James Martin. He then died on
December 22, 1948. One son, Marvin L. Martin was born to this union.
Miles Hubalek and Bertha were wed on October 17, 1950. Miles passed
away on April 17, 1981.
Bertha grew up at Collyer and attended the Collyer schools and after
graduation she also taught school in the Collyer area. She joined the
Methodist Church as an early age and was active in the U.M.W., Sunday
School and other church activities.
She was a 50-year member of The Order of Eastern Star and in November
of 1987 she would have been a 50 years member of the Rebecca Lodge.
Bertha was an honorary member of the U.M.W. and the Ladies Golf Club
and was active in many other organizations.
Bertha was a very giving and caring person and always had time to do
for others. She didn't want you to go out of your way for her, but
she would always go out of her way for you.
Bertha is survived by her daughter, Henrietta Moden and husband,
Ernest Moden, WaKeeney; two sons, Ross Ehrichs and wife Lou of
Albuquerque, New Mexico; Marvin Martin and wife Jayne of Delphos,
Kansas; a sister Minnie Burbach of Collyer; ten grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her
husbands and two sisters. Ellen Barnes and Florence Sparks.
Services were held on March 5 1987, in the First United Methodist
Church, WaKeeney, at 2 p.m. Burial was in the WaKeeney Cemetery. The
family suggests memorials to the Methodist Church, WaKeeney.

George Davis Tilton
--The Western Kansas World, WaKeeney, Trego County, Kansas April 23,
1938
George Davis Tilton, better known as Grandpa Tilton, was born in
Coshocton County, Ohio, October 17, 1848 and departed this life April
23, 1938 at the age of 89 years 6 months and 5 days.
He was the son of Lewis and Elizabeth Tilton, whose family consisted
of 10 children of which all but one preceded him in death, James L.
Tilton, of Nashville, Indiana.
He was married to Sarah Ellen Howerth on February 4, 1869 in
Bartholomew County, Indiana. After a few years there and in Brown
County, they moved to Wayne County, Illinois; returned to Indiana
after two and one half years and in 1885 came to Delphos, Kansas. In
1887 they settled on a farm five miles northeast of Collyer where
they endured all the hardships of pioneer life. In 1930 they retired
from the farm to the present home.
His wife, Sarah Ellen, (better known as Grandma Tilton) passed away
December 8, 1934. To this union, eight children were born; one
daughter preceded them in death.
Those left to mourn his death, are Elmer and John Tilton and Mrs.
Ella Austin of Collyer., Ira C. Tilton of Valpariso, Indiana,
Clarence Tilton of Sharon Springs, Kansas, Bert Tilton of Boone,
Colorado, and Mrs. Lillian Curry of Lime, Oregon; 24 grandchildren
and 31 great-grandchildren, besides a host of other relatives and
friends.
In early life he gave his heart to Christ and joined the Methodist
Church. He was a faithful Christian father giving freely of his time
and means to the work he loved.
During his last illness he loved to greet his friends and loved ones
and knew them until his death.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Zeman Hall in
Collyer, conducted by Rev. Hall, Methodist pastor of Quinter. Burial
was in the Collyer cemetery.


Sarah Ellen TILTON

Sarah Ellen TILTON, wife of George D. TILTON, departed this life on
Saturday, December 8, 1934, after a brief illness. Quick pneumonia
was the cause assigned. She was conscious until a few hours before
her death. Mrs. TILTON left besides her devoted husband, five sons
and two daughters: Elmer, John, Ira Clarence and Albert, commonly
called Bert, Mrs. Ralph AUSTIN and Mrs. William CURRY. There are also
24 living grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. Elmer, Mrs.
AUSTIN, and Mrs. CURRY live in Collyer; John, fourteen miles south;
Clarence, near Sharon Springs; Bert, near Boone, Colo., Ira is an
attorney, living in Valparaiso, Ind. All the children but Ira and
Bert were at her bedside when the Angel of Death summoned her to
Òthat bourn whence no traveler returns.Ó She also leaves three
sisters: Mrs. Martha A. POINTER, Selden, Kans., Mrs. Albert PERRY,
Columbus, Ind., and Mrs. Minnie GOETZ, Valparaiso, Ind., also a
brother, Dr. I. W. HOWERTH, of Greeley, Colo.
Grandma TILTON, as she was familiarly called, was the daughter of
John and Elizabeth HOWERTH. She was born near Bellaire, Ohio, on
August 9, 1851, married to George D. TILTON on February 4, 1869, in
Bartholomew County, Indiana. After a few years there in Brown County,
adjoining, the moved to Wayne County, Illinois; returned to Indiana
after two and one-half years and in 1885 came to Delphos, Kansas. In
1887, they settled on a farm four miles east of Collyer. In 1930 they
retired from the farm and have since lived in this town. For forty-
seven years, then, the TILTON's have been well known and respected
citizens of Trego County. in the sixty-six years of married life, the
elder TILTON's have lost but one child.
Mrs. TILTON, the deceased, was widely known in this community,
universally respected, esteemed and loved. From childhood she was an
active member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, the church of her
parents. Her genial Christian character was an example to be
emulated, and the sweet and gracious influence of her good life will
long be felt in this community.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Charles W. Harper, of the
Congregation church, assisted by Rev. Fred Attaberry. The services
were held in Zeman Hall, the Church being too small to accommodate
the unusually large attendance. Burial was in the Collyer Union
Cemetery.

Clara B. daughter of Samuel L. and Harriett J. Austen was born March
24, 1875 at Versailles, Indiana, and passed away May 10, 1962, at the
Lemke Memorial Hospital, Wakeeney, Kansas. Clara had lived 87 years,
1 month and 15 days.

On December 31, 1983, she was united in marriage to Elmer J. Tilton.
To this union four daughters were born. They are Mrs. Florence Sparks
of Hill City; Mrs. Minnie Burbach of Collyer; Mrs. Bertha Hubalek of
WaKeeney; and Mrs. Ellen Barnes of LaCrosse. There are 9
grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and on great-great-grandchild
surviving her. In 1943, Mrs. and Mrs. Tilton celebrated their 50th
wedding anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Tilton lived in and around Collyer
all of their married life.


Mrs. Tilton became a Christian early in life. She was a member of the
Methodist Church in Collyer. She was active and held many offices
throughout the years. She was a devoted wife and mother. In her
passing she leaves besides her four daughters, three son-in-laws,
John Sparks of Hill City; Miles Hubalek of WaKeeney; and Clyde Barnes
of LaCrosse. Also many other relatives, a large circle of friends and
neighbors. Funeral services were Saturday at Collyer Methodist Church
with Burial in Collyer Cemetery. Rev Harry Walz was the minister.
Music was by Mrs. Dale Scanlon, Mrs. John Tomanek, Winfred Inloes,
Lee Razek and Mrs. R. H. Berger. Submitted by Gayle M. Garrett


Elmer J. TILTON

1951
Elmer J. TILTON, son of George and Sarah TILTON, was born in Brown
County, Indiana, December 10, 1871. In 1885 he moves with his parents
to Delphos, Kansas. Two years later, in 1887, he came to Trego
County. He began farming just north of Collyer and continued to farm
until February, 1909 when the family moved into Collyer, when he
began the telephone business in which business he continued until he
retired.
E. J. TILTON was united in marriage to Clara B. AUSTEN, December 31,
1893. To this union four daughters were born, Mrs. Florence SPARKS of
Hill City, Mrs. Minnie BURBACH of Collyer, Mrs. Bertha HUBALEK of
WaKeeney, and Mrs. Ellen BARNES of LaCrosse, Kansas. There were 9
grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren. He leaves also 4 brothers, John
of Collyer, Clarence of Sharon Springs, Kans.; Ira of Valpariso,
Indiana, and Bert of Boone, Colo.; 2 sisters, Mrs. Ella AUSTIN of
Collyer, and Mrs. Lillian CURRY of WaKeeney, Kans.; many other
relatives and a large circle of friends and neighbors. Funeral
services were conducted at the Methodist Church in Collyer on
Saturday afternoon with Rev. J. P. Wiley officiating. Burial was in
the family lot in the Collyer Cemetery.

Minnie Alzora TILTON BURBACH
Minnie Alzora TILTON BURBACH ~Western Kansas World, WaKeeney, Trego
County, Kansas, January 7, 1993.
Minnie Alzora BURBACH was born September 3rd, 1899, at Collyer,
Kansas to Elmer J. and Clara (AUSTEN) TILTON. She was a baptized
member of the Collyer Methodist Church.
She grew up on her parent's farm spending many hours at her Grandpa
TILTON's homestead learning to appreciate the reward of hard work. As
a young person, Minnie shared a job with her 3 sisters answering the
telephone switchboard for the home based family telephone service.
On November 20, 1918, she married Pete A. BURBACH at the Methodist
Church in Collyer. Two children, Nadine CLAYCAMP KROEGER, WaKeeney
and Warren BURBACH, Quinter were born to this union.
Minnie is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren
and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Minnie was preceeded in death by her
three sisters, Florence SPARKS, Bertha EHRICH MARTIN HUBALEK* and
Ellen BARNES. She has one living sister-in-law, Winnie BURBACH,
Wichita Funeral services were held on January 5, 1993, at the United
Methodist Church, Quinter, with burial in the Collyer Cemetery.
Morell Funeral Home was in charge. Memorials may be made to
Youthville, Newton, Kansas, Project Care, WaKeeney or Gold Coat
Program, WaKeeney, Ks.

Ellen Tilton Barnes Fergis

1976
Ellen Barnes Fergis was born September 4, 1906 in Collyer, Kansas.
She died November 17, 1976 in Yuma, Ariz. at the Yuma Regional
Medical Center and was buried November 22 at the Yuma Cemetery.
She was a member of the Rebecca Lodge, the First Methodist Church of
Hays; The American Legion and VFW Women's Auxiliary and the Eastern
Star.
She is survived by her husband Ron Fergis of the home, two sisters;
Bertha Hubalick (Hubalek) and Minnie Burbeck (Burbach) of WaKeeney;
two daughters: Treva Sullivan of Hays and Virginia Baughman of San
Diego, California and seven grandchildren.

Henry Ehrichs

Henry Arthur Ehrichs was born on the farm near Collyer, July 14th,
1903 and was instantly killed in an auto accident near Perry, Kansas,
on August 17, 1936. Being at the time of his death, 33 years, 1 month
and 3 days of age.
Henry was a Trego county boy, spending his life on the farm near
Collyer until 1930 when he moved to WaKeeney to enter business. On
May 2, 1926 he was united in marriage to Bertha Tilton of Collyer and
to this union one son was born, Ross Herman, age 3 years. Mr. and
Mrs. Ehrichs lived on a farm near the old home place for 4 years
after they were married before moving to WaKeeney. As a child Henry
was baptized in the Lutheran Church. He attended country school and
graduated from Trego County High School with the class of 1924. He
was a Mason, a member of the Quinter Lodge. Also a member of A. O. U.
W. 390 Collyer.
He leaves to mourn his sudden and untimely death, his wife and little
son, his mother, Mrs. H. H. Ehrichs and two sisters, Mrs. Therese
Richardson and Mrs Augusta Hooper, both of Collyer, Kansas, an aunt,
Mrs. Adolph Schwanbeck, of Voda, Kansas, four cousins and his wife's
parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Tilton of Collyer and other relatives and
many friends and neighbors.
Funeral services were held at the Zeman Hall in Collyer, Thursday
morning at 10:00, by Rev. H. H. Beers. Burial was in the family lot
in Collyer Cemetery.
Out of town relatives who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs.
John Rogers and son of Quemeno; Mr. and Mrs. Lincoln Walz of Hays;
Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Sparks and family of Hill City; Mr. and Mrs. Emery
Ekey, Clarence Ekey and Lena (Lela) Glendening, all of Codell; Mr.
and Mrs. R. E. Ekey of Hays; Mrs. Loyd Tilton of Quinter; Mr. and
Mrs. Ralph Harvey and family of Studley and Mr. and Mrs. John Razak
of Utica.
