TheMFA in Furniture Design invites you to experiment with concepts, materials and form, as you build a unique point of view about furniture and create objects suited for one-of-a-kind, limited or mass production.

Furniture Design graduates go on to become thinker/makers who follow a variety of paths, from launching their own businesses making furniture and/or other objects to working as commercial product designers, teaching, running galleries and more.

Raised in Tijuana, Mexico, Tanya Aguiiga now lives in Los Angeles, where her work is informed by border experiences and infused with cross-cultural influences. She sees furniture as a way to translate emotions into 3D objects, tell stories through color and touch, and encourage people to reconsider the objects they use every day. Aguiiga, whose work has been exhibited from Mexico City to Milan, actively works to combine furniture design and community activism, as seen in her 2018 project AMBOS, which featured artists collaborating in real time on either side of the US/Mexico border.

American Society of Furniture Designers (ASFD) - As an extension of the professional furniture design industry, the club takes factory tours and coordinates visits to High Point Furniture Fair to better connect with the furniture industry.

Industrial Design has created a strong relationship with the Howest Academy in Belgium with student exchanges and the sharing of class experiences. Also, summer studios are frequently taught in Prague, Czech Republic.

There is not an added requirement for initial admission, but there is a portfolio review after the student completes an introductory class sequence which will allow the student to take upper-level classes.

I started off learning the program by following different Youtube tutorials, and mainly those by BlenderGuru. He has several tutorials which introduce the program, the interface and tools, in a pretty clear way through the process of making a donut of all things. From there I tried to find furniture specific tutorials but the options are slim. One good one though, is once again from BlenderGuru, and covers modeling a chair.

When it comes to rendering and applying textures to your material, wood texture in particular is tricky. There are lots of free textures available online but they often leave a lot to be desired. When I made the render below I was starting to get a better feel for creating a scene including creating an actual room space with windows as well as some props, but the wood grain was still pretty rough.
