I have been celebrating birthday parties for a long time now, but each time (4 kids) I deliberately try to make it simple, I have been waiting this post for a long time, so I am happy that you have shared your overwhelming simplicity! I always make the cake and for past birthdays we have given vegetables seeds for them to grow (kids loved it) and wooden spinners.

When our kids were little, we adopted the same local park-and-cupcakes strategy. Easy does it! Our recent party for our 9 year old was taking the birthday girl and three friends to a movie after school on discount day, then back to our house for ice cream sundaes, followed up by much running around outside before parents arrived.

My nephew also has a January birthday and my sister did a lovely party in a park with chai and hot chocolate in rented thermoses, where the kids went on a scavenger hunt for wildlife that my nephew had drawn to check off. Rainy but lovely.

October 26, 2021 at 11:23 AM My local NPR station (WUOT) did a tribute to Midori's birthday yesterday by playing her live performance of Shostakovich #1 with Abbado and the Berlin Philharmonic. I can honestly say I've never heard anything quite like it. It was stunning. The final eruption of applause and adulation was so genuine and enthusiastic, I can only imagine the audience had been literally on the edge of their seats throughout the concerto.

But that "someone" has to understand violin technique and a whole lot more -- musicality, repertoire, recordings, how to listen, etc. It's really not something every parent can do. Just to give one example, how many parents of young violinists can hear when thirds are out of tune even when played slowly. Be assured: Not all, and my guess is not even most.

hi Mike, sorry - I don't monitor comments around the clock. i hope you were able to figure this out. i would think if you woke up around 8am and put the pork in the slow cooker, it would be done by super bowl. that would be about 10 hours.

Anyway, since James' birthday falls on Super Bowl weekend, we're going all out-- and by "all out," I mean we're not binge-watching HBO series and doing blog work like we usually do on the weekends. I may even decide to leave my computer at home and not cook so that I have more time for celebrating (shocking, I know)!

Okay, I'm lying. I have to cook; The Super Bowl is on Sunday. It's practically blasphemous not to. But I'm telling you, I'm just throwing stuff in my slow cooker and calling it a day!

If it was possible to have an inanimate object as a soul mate, and if I believed in soul mates, and if James didn't exist, then my slow cooker would be mine. Instead of slaving away over a hot stove (that's a thing that people say, right?), I just chop, measure, mix, set it, and forget it-- until it's time to eat, that is. It's gloooorious.

This dip is a prime example of just how awesome simple slow-cooked recipes can be. Jalapenos, hot sauce, apricot preserves, lots of cheese, and kielbasa come together with practically no effort at all to make a sweet and spicy starter that's even easier to dig into. It's simple to make ahead of time and then just keep on the "warm setting" until you're ready to serve, which is my favorite way to prepare for parties.

I love that you used chicken thighs! I totally agree with the dry chicken thing, chicken breasts are fantastic but thighs win in the slow cooker. The whole meal looks completely mouthwatering. Sounds like a week full of smiles!! Have a great one! ?

So, onto the slow cooker, even though I use it rather extensively, I tend to do supervised slow cooking rather than the fix and forget variety. It still takes much less time and certainly offers all the energy benefits that I can think of.

July 2016: On Independence Day, the Commander-in-chief pulled the dad card and sang Happy Birthday to his daughter Malia for her 18th birthday alongside none other than Kendrick Lamar and Janelle Monae, who had performed at the White House earlier at the Fourth of July party.

And in other, other food news, I was able to enjoy a delicious frozen yogurt treat for my beautiful niece Denae's 9th birthday yesterday! Nothing says happy birthday like a chocolate, almond, and strawberry vanilla frozen yogurt.

The key was to say "Hey, happy birthday, Sean!" as someone from another department who didn't know better was talking to him at his desk. They'd always go, "OH MY GOD, IS IT YOUR BIRTHDAY?!" and make a big deal out of it. And then Sean would be stuck with the duty of breaking the news to them mid-excitement. It's GLORIOUS.

Many years ago, a friend of mine was in the Casino/Hotel for one reason or another, and he got on the elevator. As he wont to do, he stood near one of the back corners when going up or down. Then these two, very intoxicated ladies walked in, wearing the usual cheap plastic birthday stuff.

Eva Green is dressed by costume designer Lindy Hemming for her role as Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale in an alluring wardrobe of iconic dresses by Versace, Roberto Cavalli and Louis Vuitton. The Reformation and Luisa Viaroma have some alluring LBD gowns and day dresses with cut-out detail and Bardoesque, sweetheart necklines that are forever in slow fashion.

Einstein saw what others had missed by remaining radically open-minded. It would come to be called his theory of special relativity: A 1905 paper that resolved an apparent conflict between finite speed of light and the invariable laws of physics. But it did so with eerie consequences: Clocks in motion seem to slow down compared to clocks "at rest." What looks like a pair of simultaneous events to one spectator may look widely spaced in time to another. Physical items in motion seem to contract along the dimension they're moving. It's unsettling, but it works for all objects in motion, as long as they don't speed up or slow down.

1968 - Jose Feliciano performed a slow, bluesy version of "The Star Spangled Banner" before the fifth game of the World Series between the Detroit Tigers and the St. Louis Cardinals. Although released as a single that peaked at No. 50, it wasn't well received in all circles; some radio stations refused to play his songs (at least until he released "Feliz Navidad," two years later). In an October 2006 NPR interview, Feliciano expressed pride at opening the door for later interpretations of the national anthem.
