If your network-capable printer is not automatically detected by Windows, you will need to set it up manually. This will involve going to your printer menu, configuring a TCP/IP a port, and installing the drivers. Follow the steps below to add a network printer in Windows 10.
Then click Add a Printer.
Note: Once Windows detects your printer, all you have to do is follow the on-screen instructions for setting it up. If this is the case, you can stop at this point. However, if Windows does not auto-detect your printer, proceed to the next step.
In the drop-down menu for Standard Device Type, select the device type that corresponds with your printer brand. For example, if you have a Canon printer, choose either Canon Network Printer or Canon Network Printing Device. Windows will then detect the driver model. You will notice that once it detects the driver, your printer will be added to the list of devices in the Printer & Scanners menu.
Set up optional preferences. Type a printer name if you want to. Otherwise, click Next. In the next window, you could also set up set up printer sharing if you like (generally you should not do this). Once done, click on Next.
1. Was able to get it to upload the patch. Then, the driver up did upload. I was able to print one photo and scan one doc. Didn't use the printer for several days, then it would not work at all--not to print or scan. The printer hardware is still in excellent condition, but the message reads that the PC does not recognize that the printer is plugged in, or attached by USB port.
3. To answer basic questions : A. Yes, I am clicking the drop-down box on Windows 11. But that does not change the driver choice. B. Yes, I have uploaded both patches underneath the only driver choice. C. Yes, I have installed dirvers before and operated computers for 40 years. D. Yes, I had unplugged the USB port and turned off the computer when installing, then plugged in and turned on when the appropriate instructional box said to. E. Yes, I have chut down and restarted the PC in between trying again to upload the driver.
EDIT: I found a solution myself. Using the Win 11 Settings dialog, I clicked the "Add device" button...and it WORKED! I've become so accustomed to having to work my way around because the built-in Windows function fails, I didn't even think to try it. I'm cautiously optimistic about Windows 11 at this point, which is a pleasant surprise.
After the installation completed, it appeared as Canon MX920 series Printer WS and I was able to successfully print a Windows Printer Test Page. I tried opening a print dialog in Chrome, and then clicked "print using system dialog..." and that also worked, bringing up the familiar Canon printer control software that I had on my old PC. That may have come from attempting to install the above referenced driver, even though it failed to find the printer.
On computer, in Windows Settings. I followed the steps to add a printer or scanner. I have the printer attached via USB. Windows found it, identified it, and installed the necessary drivers with no further input from me. I did not have to point to the downloaded Canon files, so I do not think those were used.
Can I ask when you actually did the Windows 11 upgrade? I ask because I'm contemplating doing the Windows upgrade very soon, but I know drivers, especially printer drivers, can be messy to deal with after these kind of upgrades. I have an MX340 and I don't see any Win 11 drivers available. I'm hoping not to lose access to print after the upgrade. Thanks.
Lobster 70, this time I used the green dialogue box to open and install the driver, but never got a box like the one you show above. Where did you find that box? On the Canon driver site? Or on your computer?
Hello.Just purchased a new Dell tower and am bummed that my trusty imageCLASS D420 will not work with windows 11(at least i don`t think as i cannot find an 11 driver.Much obliged if anyone knows a way i can get them to communicate.BIG thanx!
Hi Hector - thanks for the reply. I am able now to connect to the printer with a USB cable, but through my wired network. Is there a factory reset procedure so I can reset all of the network features?
Windows 10 drivers do not work for me on a Windows 11 HP Pavilion, installing as a local printer. Printer installs but does not print test page, nor a Word document. Document just stays in print queue.
Addition by JustDon: My problem has been solved. Here is what I think I did wrong. First, I had the printer plugged in to the PC and turned on when I ran setup.exe to install the drivers. Second, I tried to install it in LPT1, the parallel port when it needs a USB port. With the drivers improperly installed, there was no choice of a USB port. Properly installed, a port named USB001 was added to the port list. An aside: I read that some older printers can't run on the new high speed USB ports, but after I installed it in a USB 2.0 port, I moved it to a "super speed" usb port and it worked fine. So yes, the ImageClass D420 can be installed on a Windows 11 PC (mine is a HP Pavillion) using the Windows 10 drivers, as Hector said, but if you don't install them correctly, you may mistakenly conclude it won't work.
My question is simple, since the button for Remove of the printer can only be selected after clicking it, and this printer cannot be clicked, how do I remove it? Not sure how it got there in the first place, but since printing only works half the time, I like to get rid of it.
The answer posted here finally worked for me; I was getting frustrated since a bunch of other posts kept saying to just follow the standard steps to remove a printer, none of which worked in this case. Hope this helps!
My computer recently updated and apparently USB Printer Controller Utility doesn't quite work with it. As soon as it starts, it tells me "Server does not exist", this is obviously because I had a printer on auto connect.
I uninstalled, cleaned the list of auto connect printers, reinstalled, and at start, it should scan and find the router but it doesn't find anything. I tried already executing as administrator, also checked Windows firewall and everything looks fine.
@Kevin_Z Yes, I noted that the list doesn't include Windows 11, it's just been released recently so it would be very naive to expect a compatibility check so early. My question wasn't related to what the compatibility list says, I can read that too.
I wanted to ask if someone had actually installed Windows 11 and tried to use this app (which, as some other users have noted, isn't exactly nicely coded, for example it has hardcoded the router at 192.168.1.1 so if you have it at a different IP you need to manually use a hex editor).
- Updating Windows 11 as of today fixes this issue and the router becomes visible, and the attached USB printer too. Issue is that you can't attach the detected printer to any existing device. Only default software printers are shown (as Microsoft Print to PDF).
I'm guessing MS will solve these printing issues in future updates, and I guess with some luck TP Link USB Printer Controller will work. I'll track this and try to keep this updated to help others. Of course if someone tests this too, I'd guess we could make a good tracking of this issues.
It would be nice if the TP Link support could take a look at this, since windows 11 is officially releasing and it would be very bad to not be able to update an entire OS because this app doesn't work and it's the only way to get the printer feature working with these TP Link routers.
@dogufo The TPLink USB driver doesn't recognize by itself the printer, you need to have first the printer drivers installed in your system in order to let the TPLink USB app "pair" the device in the router with a system printer. Just install the printer driver and add the printer manually to your Windows system, and then it should be fine.
If the workstations are talking directly to the printers, yes, there may be issues. But if the workstations are talking to the server, only the server needs to know where the printer really is (IP-wise).
To get the clients to update after changing, shut down the print spooler service, restart it (works at both ends, server for everyone, client for just one). The clients update info when they make the connection to the print spooler.
Firstly a big thank you for letting me access the Private Preview. I think this will be a great solution for my clients and even better once we actually see printer hardware with this capability built in.
@Grant Klaaysen - In Printer Setting user interface, when you click on Add Printer, do you notice a link (after some time) at the bottom saying something like "Search for Universal Print for printers" or "Search for your organization printers"? If you see that link, then you can click on it and search the printer by some part of the name you shared it with.
