Dear Chavurah members,
I have loved everything that Simone Zelitch has written and am thrilled to be able to ask you to support her new book.
Shabbat shalom,
Rabbi LindaGood Morning,
Some of you may know that Simone Zelitch’s novel Waveland will be published in May. The book tells the story of Beth Fine, a head-strong and outspoken Freedom Summer volunteer who joins a thousand other white students in Mississippi in 1964.
Like many of those volunteers, Beth is Jewish. The story of Jewish involvement in the Civil Rights movement is not a new one, but has not often been the subject of fiction. Beth’s story isn’t simple or heroic. As she tells her daughter years later, she was “the girl who did everything wrong." She comes to Mississippi as an outsider, and struggles to move beyond her good intentions and make a difference in the South and in this country. It is an American story, but also a deeply Jewish one.
When we spoke with Simone about the best way to get word out about Waveland, she immediately mentioned The Jewish Book Council, the same organization that had awarded her previous novel, Louisa, the Goldberg Prize. If the JBC was aware of Waveland, it would be on the radar of book clubs, synagogues and community centers across the country and she would have an opportunity to pitch it at their annual networking conference.
However, In order to be eligible for the Jewish Book Council’s network of authors, The Head & the Hand Press would have to send them 100 copies of the galleys, and pay a registration fee of nearly $500.00 by April 15. This price-tag is geared toward major publishers and limits independent publishers like ourselves, as 100 copies of the galleys represents 10% of our print-run.
We came close to writing off this opportunity, but then Simone came to us with an idea: to appeal to readers who would want to see Waveland registered with the Jewish Book Council and would help us raise money to print the 100 copies necessary to do so.
We know that Jewish literature and culture is important to you, so we are hoping that you can make an early contribution toward the production and marketing of this book to bring Simone’s important story to Jewish audiences.
For a $35 contribution by March 15, you will send Simone’s novel Waveland to the Jewish Book Council for consideration. In return for your support, you will receive a signed copy of Waveland when it is published in May, as well as be named an “Early Supporter” in the back of the book.
