Late last year, Schiffer publishing sent me a book to review called "Fashion design techniques" by Zeshu Takamura. I was happy to get it because I wanted to learn how to draw better so that if I ever get around to submitting my knitting designs for publication in magazines, I would be able to sketch them out.

Deborah's class included a slide show of fashion drawings she's collected that go back to the early 20th Century. The styles of drawing varied, and so did the fashions, but she was able to turn us onto some of the basic underlying principles. Not only did she have us sketching people, but more importantly, she had us sketching knitted textures. We explored the power of lines, how to give them more weight with thickness, and how to draw things like cables. The three-hour class was a lot of fun.

Deborah implored us to practice drawing for 10 to 30 minutes every day, and honestly, I haven't done that. I probably should. I've been so obsessed with this hats project that I haven't done much else, and I'm looking forward to wrapping the hats up and knitting sweaters again. But I've taken some time to look at "Fashion design techniques," and while it's not exactly like Deborah's class, it covers a lot of the same ground, only in more detail and without the knitting-centric focus.

The book has four chapters: The Body, Technical Drawing, Fashion Drawing and Computer Graphic Techniques. The first chapter goes into detail about sketching both the female and male anatomy, with lots of illustrations. I was surprised to see actual diagrams of skeletons and of muscles on bodies, which reminded me of how Michaelangelo used to dissect corpses to learn how muscles were structured and how they work. I guess if you are a serious artist, this is essential information. There are also a lot of sketches/diagrams about poses, how shifting the body's weight makes a difference in the sketch, etc. And there were detailed drawings of body parts such as hands and feet, in various poses. Lessons about drawing the head included hair styles, different face angles and more.

The second chapter is about drawing styles from a technical point of view. In my mind, these were catalog illustrations. The drawings are flat, and they don't include bodies. Pants, coats, jackets, dresses, shirts are all covered. There is even a sketch of a cabled sweater, but it's pretty basic.

The third chapter puts the first two together. The people are finally wearing clothes, and the clothes drape, swirl, get baggy and wrinkle in all the right places, such as the elbows, underarms or knees.

And finally, the last chapter covers computer-generated graphics, how to use Photoshop in your work, and making the design of a flat fabric look appropriately three-dimensional in your computer-generated artwork.

Deborah has been doing her sketches to submit knitwear designs for more than 30 years, and I don't think she has diagrammed human musculature or drawn her sketches on her Macintosh with computer calculations as to how fabric should drape and wrap in her presentations. So I think that some of this book is aimed at someone who is drawing fashions for a different purpose: If you're selling fashion to the public, you need all this stuff. But maybe for submitting designs to magazines, you can get away with knowing only half of it.

Still, I think it's a really useful tool, and I'm glad to have it in my library. If you are as out to sea about how to draw your creations as I was until I took Deborah's class, this book is an excellent reference tool that can really help your presentations look professional.
