AlthoughWindows 10 is a reliable operating system, you can encounter many problems over time. You may have issues with starting up or shutting down, excessive memory usage, performance running apps, and battery draining quickly, among many other issues, and when any of this happens, resetting to factory settings will come in handy.
If you experience persistent performance issues, Windows 10 has various recovery options to reset the system to the factory settings keeping or removing your files to resolve common problems and improve performance. You even have the option to download and use the original Windows image instead of the custom manufacturer recovery image that may contain bloatware and settings you don't need.
If you're preparing to make some extra money selling your computer, there's nothing else you need to do. However, if you're refreshing the device to start over with a clean installation, you'll still need to check for updates, make sure none of the drivers are missing, reinstall apps, and restore your files from a previous backup.

I had an incident where my CTRL key was stuck and the mouse wheel was adjusting the zoom level of my Windows 10 desktop. I would like to reset the zoom level back to its default, but CTRL-0 doesn't seem to work on the Windows desktop. I have no way of knowing (besides eyeballing) if my desktop is back to the default zoom level when I adjust it. Is there any way of resetting it to the default?
I also thought that CTRL + 0 wasn't working to reset to 100% zoom ... but it is only when I use the 0 key on the extended keyboard that it fails, using the 0 key one main keyboard (above P) that it resets to 100% ... I'll just need to get into the habit of using the main number keys instead of the small numeric keypad that I am so used to.
I had a plugin installed in Visual Studio 2008, and it created some extra dockable windows. I have uninstalled it, and I can't get rid of the windows it created - I close them, but they always come back. They're just empty windows now, since the plugin is no longer present, but nothing I've tried gets rid of them. I've tried:
Be sure you back up your settings before you do this. I made the mistake of trying this to fix an issue and didn't realize it would undo all my appearance settings and toolbars as well. Took a lot of time to get back to the way I like things.
I had similar problem except that it happened without installing any plugin. I begin to get this dialog about source control every time I open the project + tons of windows popping up and floating which I had to close one by one.
I had a completely corrupted Visual Studio layout. When I tried to enter debug, I was told that VS had become unstable. When I restarted, my window layout would then be totally screwed. I tried restoring the VS current user settings in the registry from a backup, but that didn't help. However, restoring CurrentSettings.vssettings seems to have cured it.
One quirk of Visual Studio (at least VS2005) is that settings aren't saved until you exit. That means that if VS crashes at all while you are using it, any layout changes you made will be lost. The way around this is to always gracefully exit when you have set up everything like you want it to be.
I've been having several issues that I've been told can be resolved only through resetting program to default settings. I've tried for 2 days with no luck. I tried going through the Windows Start menu> AutoCAD 2020>Reset Settings to Default Regardless of whether CAD is running or not, I get the same dialog box that pops up on screen and says: "Reset Settings - Application is Currently Running" with a big red X. There's an OK button. I've tried leaving the dialog box open for a few hours, I've tried hitting OK. Nothing happens. I've also tried going through the options menu inside CAD and had no luck there either. Researched this and can't find anyone with the same issue. Would greatly appreciate any help.
I have virtual machine strictly for CAD because Mac version is terrible. I've run it this way for a long time without issue. My computer is quite powerful and plenty of RAM is allotted to the virtual machine running Windows.
I've reset the computer several times. Shut down for long periods, forced quit the program, you name it. Nothing changes the result of selecting 'Restore Settings to Defualt: I get the same dialog box
I had no experience with this. Thank you. It seems like a really good suggestion. On a Mac it's called the equivalent of Task Manager is Activity Monitor. But I scoured that thing and saw no sign of any operations or tasks being performed by AutoCAD or Autodesk. Shoot! That seemed like such a great and simple solution!
If I uninstall & reinstall the program (which is my last resort & have been dreading!) is there a way to keep all of my preferences? I have a lot of custom Dim Styles, Linetypes, etc. and really don't want to lose all of that. I began learning CAD about 20 years ago but discontinued with it because it was constantly crashing and so buggy. I have to say, I'm having the same experience now. It has the potential to be a very powerful program but I've worked with a lot of memory-intensive graphics and 3D rendering software as a designer and nothing holds a candle to the instability and issues I've had with this program. And using it natively on a PC proved no better for me than running it on Parallels. It's so frustrating!
Do a Reinstall without uninstalling. This will not remove your customized files. (If you're nervous, make a copy of the folder that contains your "roaming" Windows profile data - not sure if this applies in your Mac/VM scenario. You'll have to do a little research on your own.)
Went to the Task Manager in Windows & got this. (see screenshots) This doesn't seem good. The behavior here is what CAD has been doing & the reason I wanted to reset to default in the first place - I can grab a pull down menu, but there's nothing in it. CAD is the only program I use in Windows. If I scroll over the empty pull down menu, it will populate, so I did hit 'end task' in Task Manager but I can't see which task I'm ending.
This totally makes sense. I will change the setting right away. I'm next in line for support chat w/Parallels support (in Safari) so will try your suggestion as soon as I can close this browser. Thank you all for your suggestions. I really appreciate it.
So I set the virtual machine back to full screen mode. It still didn't work but I think it would have had Windows not gone all crazy. I reinstalled another Windows 10 virtual machine fully expecting to have to install CAD on that one. But, just for fun, I checked my original buggy virtual machine (Windows wouldn't/couldn't open the desktop or 'My PC' app--I just got a list of files. Something was very wrong.) and it worked! Windows was back to normal, and, most importantly, CAD was back to normal, displaying all text in pull down menus and other strange issues I was having (you can see my problem from a few weeks ago) were gone. So I don't know what downloading another copy of Windows on another machine did, but it fixed it. Maybe it somehow reset the original? I don't know but wanted to share it in case anyone else runs across this seemingly unsolvable problem.
After every action the application freezes for about 30 seconds and to build this drawing is taking forever. Its not the computer memory, this started happening after AUTOCAD PERFORMED AN UPDATE, now the program is screwed.
If you choose Keep my files, apps and settings will default to what they were when the PC was brand new. This setting can be turned off by clicking the Change settings link and switching it off. If you choose Remove everything, there's also a way to remove your personal files while saving apps and settings. Click the Change settings link and toggle the Data erasure option to on.
I have recently installed GIMP 2.8.6 on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 64-bit and for the first time when I opened it, two windows along with the main window were available, but now I can only see a single main window. How can I bring those default windows back?
Since you recently installed GIMP and closed the Toolbox window, I would suggest to reset your window preferences because it would also restore the dockable dialogs and the Layers windows which is extremly handy when working with GIMP.
All option settings, including Appearance, Aliases and View settings were reset to default in the middle of working. Following by a crash of my working file where I was actively editing V-ray materials.
Not sure if my hardware spec is too outdated, but random crashes have happened so frequently in Rhino 7. At first I thought the stability would improve through updates, but unfortunately major crashes keep happening ever after the release. All I can rely on is the autosave files in Recycle Bin that may or may not actually be successfully saved there.
A few more words about my attitude. The very mentality of yours for suggesting people to upgrade their hardware even before understanding the entire situation is a reflection of what the tech industry has been imposing on all users in this time of history. Instead of providing more accessible tools and democratizing technology to enable a larger base of users to fulfill their goals, updates have happened to become more and more demanding on the performance of the working device that become necessary to upgrade every few years. When you are making updates for the sake of legitimizing software purchasing, and you still expect that users should just internalize the frustration as individuals, I am not going to apologize for my attitude to express the disappointment of the project. Good luck to your development team and I am looking forward to the success of your future releases.
