I installed TigerVNC 64-Bit Version 1.5.0 on Windows 7 Pro and Windows 8.1 Pro. I accepted the default installation, including registration of the service and starting of the service after installation.

I was not able to connect to either server from another (known working) TigerVNC client.

I updated the Windows 8.1 Pro installation to Version 1.5.80 as recommended on the TigerVNC forums. This did not fix the problem.

After significant investigation, I discovered that the service had been configured by the installer to allow the service to interact with the desktop. For security reasons, this feature has been disabled in "recent" versions of Windows. I turned off this feature in the TigerVNC service by unchecking the "Allow service to interact with desktop" option in the Windows Service Manager. I restarted the service and I was able to connect to the TigerVNC service.

As a follow-on experiment I uninstalled Version 1.5.80 and re-installed Version 1.5.0. I was not able to make this version work as a service using this same configuration. I uninstalled this version again and re-installed Version 1.5.80. I am now working again.

I repeated these same procedures for Windows 7; i.e., I needed to install Version 1.5.80 and I needed to disable the "Allow service to interact with desktop" option. I am now working on Windows 7 Pro also.

As a side note, if I RDP into the Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 workstations the TigerVNC service appears to get disabled while the RDP session is alive. Something else to chase down...

I hope that others find this helpful.

Dave
