Auburn golfer Logan Reilly advances to quarterfinals of U.S. Amateur

On a strong run ever since the NCAA Championship got started, Auburn golfer Logan Reilly has continued that this week up at Merion Golf Club in Philadelphia for the U.S. Amateur. As part of the huge field that included six current Auburn players, Reilly was one of two to advance to the 64-man match play bracket portion of the event after two days of stroke play.

While rising senior Josiah Gilbert was eliminated in the Round of 64, Reilly is now in the quarterfinals and down to the final eight players in the field. Reilly made a late run in the first round after trailing late, winning 18 to even his match and then winning the 19th hole to advance to Thursday.

Reilly's morning matchup was with Evan Liu, a junior golfer committed to North Carolina. While Reilly took an early lead, it fell to a tie on the third hole and then eventually slipped in favor Liu by two holes after the 10th. Auburn's rising sophomore responded by winning holes No. 11 and 12 to tie the match, then won No. 15 and then 17 to close out his match 2&1.

That got Reilly to the Sweet 16, where he was matched up with arguably the biggest name remaining in the field: Oklahoma standout Ryder Cowan. Cowan was tied for low medalist honors as the top amateur at the U.S. Open with former Auburn golfer Jackson Koivun. It was a daunting matchup, but one that didn't phase Reilly one bit at least to start.

The Virginia native and national champion in Reilly took the lead on the third hole, lost it on the fourth and then regained it on the fifth hole. He held that lead and grew it all the way to 3UP, but slowly saw that slip as things got all square again on the 14th hole. Reilly then won the next two holes and looked to be in a strong spot to close it out as he was 2UP with two to play, but bogeyed the 17th and double bogeyed the 18th losing both holes and ending up in a playoff.

Despite losing momentum in a big way with a strong chance to close it out, Reilly and Cowan went to the 14th hole for the first playoff hole and tied it with pars. They went to a second playoff hole and with Cowan in trouble in the fairway bunker and coming up short of the green on his approach, Reilly had a challenge of his own in the thick Merion rough after his tee shot. He responded by firing one close to the pin and setting himself up in a strong spot and while Cowan got it in a solid spot for par, he was unable to convert while Reilly got in for par and ended the match.

Reilly will face Michael Lugiano in the next round, a rising junior for Liberty's golf team. The match is set for Friday at 1 p.m. CT, with the event being streamed on Peacocok/NBCSN starting at 2p.m. CT.

Winner of the U.S. Amateur gets an exemption to the next 10 U.S. Amateurs, exemptions to the U.S. Open and The Open and likely an invite to the 2027 Masters, too. The winner also gets PGA Tour U points and helps boost them up in the world amateur rankings.
