Jackson Koivun qualifies for FedEx Cup playoffs with T-29 finish at Wyndham ChampionshipBy Christian Clemente

Jackson Koivun continues to make history on the PGA Tour. In just five pro starts, Koivun has tied Tiger Woods for the fewest starts needed to make the FedEx Cup playoffs. He's also the first player to qualify for the playoffs since it switched to a 70-man starting field in fewer than 13 events.
After just five starts into his young professional career, Koivun finished T-29 at the Wyndham Championship which was able to land him 70th in the FedEx Cup standings and the final spot inside the top-70 threshold to qualify for the playoffs. Koivun now heads to Memphis, Tennessee, for the St. Jude Championship next weekend, where the playoffs start with the top-70 players in FedEx Cup points and the top-50 in points after the event advance to the next event.
The former Auburn standout pieced together rounds of 67-68-66 and a 71 (+1) on Sunday at the Wyndham Championship over the weekend. It was a solid enough showing that got him into the playoffs as he played his third straight week after winning the 3M Open then finishing T-31 at the Rocket Classic last weekend.
Entering the weekend in 70th place, Koivun hoped to make a move with a strong tournament but ended up having to live on the bubble all weekend long. Throughout Sunday's round he was consistently teetering anywhere from 67th to 71st in the FedEx Cup standings, trying to fight to make it. His round opened with a bogey, then birdies on holes No. 4 and 5, but that was wiped away by a bogey on No. 6. A bogey on No. 14 put him over par for the day and he was unable to get a couple looks at birdie to go down the stretch as he got into the clubhouse in 70th place.
"It's tough," Koivun said afterwards on the CBS broadcast. "I kind of noticed, especially coming down the stretch, every single hole where I was and just some putts didn't fall and some swings weren't very good. Like I said earlier, I just tried to stay committed to every shot and now it's in the hands of the field."
Making his pro debut at the John Deere Classic, Koivun actually missed the cut and failed to secure any FedEx Cup points. He then rallied off a T-10 at the ISCO Championship, his win at the 3M Open, T-31 at the Rocket Classic and then T-29 at the Wyndham Championship. Prior to his round of 71 on Sunday, Koivun had shot in the 60's every single round since the John Deere Classic.
Steven Fisk, Matt Wallace, Keegan Bradley, Davis Thompson and Mac Meissner were the first five to miss out on the playoffs behind Koivun. Jason Day, Ben James, Brandt Snedeker, Brooks Koepka, Tony Finau, Billy Horschel and Rasmus Højgaard were some of the notable PGA Tour pros who did not make the playoffs despite getting to play in quite a few more events than Koivun.
It will require a huge finish next week at the St. Jude Championship for Koivun to make it to the BMW Championship and be inside the top-50 for the second round of the FedEx Cup playoffs.
