Today a great woman has left us. She was strong, and sure, honest, and full of spirit. Her strength to overcome adversary astounded many. She out lived two husbands, both that she loved, and even a few of her own children.
This dynamic Lady worked the land, and did things in her later years that many people today would not and could not do in their youth. She had peacocks as pets, and even the odd emu and ostrich. Her omelets were something that could make you smile, even after she tried to convince you that the chicken that laid it would give you the chicken pox.
From her wisdom many have grown to better people, from her love so many are here today. Without her in my life I would have been a different person, and never known what true strength was.
She never seemed to miss a beat when the doctor told her about her cancer, or having 6 months to live. Each of the 3 times she would go home and work with her birds, and plow her little garden. In the end she would let us know what she thought of the doctors that did not know what they were saying as she lived far beyond their time tables and would beat the cancer.
Her soft laughter would often hide a shape humor that underlies great knowledge. This woman lived through the great depression without even knowing there was a change, as they were already poor. Still she raised her family and insured the future for generations to come with the lessons that were passed on.
Today I have lost a hero, a woman that I can only hope to emulate, my Grandmother’s mother.
Mamaw you will be missed for now and always. I will always remember sitting in front of your house on a summer afternoon for a visit, or chasing a chicken around the yard, even if it would give me the chicken pox.
