Whyis it that Sonic 1's emulation is screwed up SOMETIMES? The sound effects are out-of-sync, and the music is scratchy, this isn't all the time. I'd like to know why it's so inconsistent. And, furthermore, when I played it on a friend's PS2, Sonic 1's emulation was worse than ever and never worked perfectly at all.

From what I've read, Sonic Team were inexperienced with emulating for the PS2/XBox, and so Sonic Mega Collection Plus suffered from problems that weren't present in the original Gamecube version. I've heard these problems pop up in every other review I've seen for it, and so I didn't bother to buy the game.

And speaking of emulation issues... a friend's cousin got Sonic 1 on VC. I wanted to test out how it felt when playing with a Wii remote on it's side because I usually love playing games that way... it really sucked and I kept making short hops. I also noticed that the clouds in green hill didn't scroll. What's up with the short jumping?

There were multiple versions of Sonic 1. Only the first was released in America, which is used on the Virtual Console as well as other re-releases. Later versions added extra effects such as scrolling clouds and a fixed level select.

I don't know anything about the Xbox version, I have the PS2 version because I got it back in late 2004 using a Gamestop/EB Games gift card I got for Christmas that year, and we didn't have an Xbox. I have a 360, but I have about 12 or so original Xbox games for it (all of which are BC with 360), and we don't have SMCP on it because we already have it on PS2.

And the only differences between SMC and SMCP are that SMCP has bonus features (I think) and 6 GameGear Sonic games (but the only good one on there is Sonic Chaos). I don't know TOO much about SMC because I never played that one, and I find it pointless to buy that if I have SMCP for PS2 and the Ultimate Genesis Collection for PS3.

Apparently the Mega Man/Mega Man X compilations suffer from enough problems as it is - I remember once reading a list of errors that made my heart shudder. It seems more desirable to use unofficial emulation...

My PS2 version used to play perfectly on my PS2, I only started to see issues when I played it on the PS3. Although I already have most of the good games as ROMs on my laptop it is good incentive to get the SUGC soon.

Jake - Mega Man games are best played on their original systems. The collections are nowhere near the quality of even the PS2 version of Mega Collection. Just play them on the Virtual Console or something.

This track makes me so nostalgic and it isnt even from the classic era. I just immediatley have fond memories of a simpler, less hectic time for the Sonic series, where everything was pure and well-loved.

I absolutely love this game and would recommend it to anyone who is interested in the Sonic series. I would spend hours with this game playing all the different games and you shouldve seen my face when I figure out you could play S3&K together on it. One of the best game compliations I think I've played (I've never played Mario All-Stars so I don't know if it's better). I think Sonic Mega Collection is the perfect representation for the Sonic franchise, from the games it has, to all the little extra stuff.

I'd still argue that Sonic Jam is the definitive classic Sonic compilation purely for the amount of love, detail and attention that clearly went into it, but Mega Collection is definitely a close second in terms of presentation.

Shem Sonic Jam is Saturn-only and thus pretty inconvenient to play in this day and age without either emulating or actually digging out a Saturn. Well, they're the only options, so I guess it's impossible to play it without doing either of those. D: But those two options are both pretty impractical.

Not that I know of, but then again, I hardly played it. I bought SMC for Gamecube and the guy sent me an American copy, so I got a refund. Then I got SMC+ for XBox, and once I saw the 50hz issues I stopped playing. And when I go SMC+ on PC, well, it was perhaps the worst release I've ever seen of any game. All that was on the disc was a .RAR file, and in that was the SMC+ ISO! And I bought the damn thing from a Morrisons store. Like seriously, wtf?

I had a lot of fun with Sonic Mega Collection Plus back in the day - being a PS2 owner, it was the only way I could experience any of the classic titles for a while. Now that I actually own a Mega Drive with the original versions of the titles, along with a few other ports (Mega Drive Collection for PS3 and PSP, Sonic Classic Collection on DS) it's not as unique and I've not played it in quite a while... those music tracks you posted, it's the first time I've heard those in years, and do they take me back... I think SMCP might have been my third Sonic title, after Sonic Heroes and Sonic Advance... and it was awesome. I loved looking through the old Archie covers and stuff like that, though the collection in Sonic Gems Collection was even better.

The one thing that bugged me to no end was the method for unlocking games - as well as being completely unintuitive, it was frustrating and irritating. Sure, if the games are good then I don't mind playing them multiple times - but having to load up certain titles 30 times each just to unlock other games (or mini-games) was irritating... It also seemed a bit random how they threw The Ooze and Comix Zone into the mix when neither has anything to do with Sonic or Sonic Team, but at least Comix Zone is a pretty creative game.

Speaking of the lock-on features for Sonic & Knuckles, BTW - one thing that SMCP definitely has over the Mega Drive Collection for PS3 is that it, well, has the locked-on titles... it's irritating especially since the PS3 release is cleaner, faster and runs at 60hz rather than the mediocre 50hz version which the UK had to put up with for SMCP.

Sonic Mega Collection Plus was my first Sonic game, and what got me into Sonic in the first place. The music and presentation are the most unique and nostalgic of any of the collections (now that I've seen gameplay footage of them all), and I love it for the fact it introduced me to Sonic. I know, I have some big nostalgia goggles, but still, I love this game.

SMC for the GC was how I got to Classic Sonic and the Genesis games in the first place. Sure, I have the same games on my DS now, but it doesn't mean I don't take time to sit down and enjoy it. Still a wonderful title/compilation in the Director's Cut era.

A true gem and my second Sonic game. It introduced me to S3&K. I was overjoyed when my 2 favorites on the collection, after playing them so many times, turned into one super-game. It is my most played on the disc, racking up 40 some hours. But after I bought the classics on VC, I haven't gone back. Until I learned by playing all the games a stupid amount of times, you could unlock Ristar. I had heard good things about it, and it was on the VC, but what if I didn't like it? The solution? Crank up the old PS2 and get to work. For 3 hours, I opened and closed the games I never played, which took a while, thanks to the annoyingly long saving every time I quit. In the end it was all worth it, as Ristar is quite good, but very hard! Overall, this compilation is what got me hooked on the series. Even if, now that I look back, it's very hard to play 2D sonic with a PS2 controller.

I recently did some brief mental mathematics, and realised that my PlayStation2 disc that received the most playtime was Sonic Mega Collection Plus, beating my other favourites by days. It was, and remains, a beautiful experience and perhaps the best way of blasting through the classic history of Sonic the Hedgehog (both MegaDrive and GameGear). The music, the presentation, the bonus unlockables... everything about it. And okay, it took a further release to silence and appease the fanboys with Sonic Gems Collection, but at least that was a budget release.

That story of the PC version sounds VERY weird though. My PC version of SMC+ worked fine and as expected of a PC release (aside from usual SEGA "durr mouse menu controls and in-game graphics options, what's that?") and was certainly not just a .rar on a disc.

I actually won a copy of SMC+ at SoS 2008. I already have GC Mega Collection which I like a bit more as the games don't have borders. Still, SMC+ is superior in a number of ways, such as the 'save anywhere' feature and the inclusion of the Game Gear games and more extras. Still don't prize it over GC Mega Collection but that doesn't mean it's not great The large black borders when I play it on my 360 are an additional turn-off.

Mega Collection (Plus) is definitely a good way to revisit those classics, or be introduced to them. The great thing about it is, although I did own all the Megadrive/Genesis titles, I never owned a game gear. Getting to play some of the GG titles up there was fantastic fun. Sonic Chaos outranks alot of other games that were on the Megadrive/Genesis IMO. Another cool feature is the ability to view the covers for Sonic's Archie adventures. There's even one comic which you can read.

My only true gripe is that Sonic CD was not in this collection. I still have not gotten to play that one, since I don't own a SEGA CD. It's on Gems Collection though, so maybe I'll buy that to play it. Or just get the PSN/XBLA release.

It was my first time re-introduced to the classics in nearly a decade. It was also the first time I had some legitamite time with Sonic 3 and K, and ended up becoming not only the easiest game, at the time, to get through, but also my favorite out of the classics for its lovely story driven presentation and gameplay.
