As Jessica has said, usually medical reasons are the only way to get a transfer.  Any request for a hardship transfer has to be made to Nathaniel Quarterman, Director, CID, at P. O. Box 99, Huntsville, TX 77342.  The request must be a written letter and it must have with it a doctor's letter stating the medical reason that the transfer is being requested.  You can try to get a transfer for other reasons, but that's not very likely to be granted.  The inmate must also be case free for the preceding 12 months and the original distance to travel must be more than 300 miles. It often takes some time to get a transfer and all transfer requests are not approved, especially if the inmate is in a program that isn't offered at a closer unit.

Hi Joan,
I had a call last night from a lady asking this same question. She
said there's someone contacting the inmates and telling them for
$1200, they can get moved. I really hope no one falls for this!!!
Please let everyone know that paying someone will NOT get their loved
ones moved closer to home.
Thanks!

Why does the classification department have to be so cruel? I am  disabled and they have moved my husband farther away. I wrote them for a hardship transfer and so did my doctor and lawyer. Can you give me any advice??

Good heavens!  Asking for money and preying upon susceptible people!  I guess all the criminals are not in prison!
And as to the "cruelty" of TDCJ, it is very unlikely that the folks who did the moving knew or cared anything about the family's situation or location when they moved the inmate.  Movements are made for many reasons and consideration of the family situation is typically not one of them.  I rather doubt that such a big bureaucracy as TDCJ keeps a list of families for whom a move of an inmate would be a hardship and purposely moves those inmates.
Keep trying for the hardship transfer and keep in mind that it often takes several months for one to be approved (or not approved).  Also, the Classification Division makes the hardship transfers but only the CID Director, Mr. Quarterman, approves them.

Hi  LJoh713825,

I would call you by name but I don't know it.

First off, I'm sure I will hear it from the powers that be about my comment, but I believe in what I say and I say what I mean.

1)  Your husband now belongs to TDCJ, they can and will do as they wish, now and in the future.  You don't have to like it, they could care less about you, him or anyone else. Most of the employees that work in the prisons are there because that's the only  job available, it's a paycheck, they don't know how to deal with inmates, and they certainly don't have any compassion for the family or the inmate. They forget that there is a fine line between an employee and a inmate.  They haven't been caught.

2)  My suggestion to you is to stay on them, send letters every month, to the same people,
Don't ever use foul language, be respectful, regardless of the way they treat you or your husband.  Once you show them that you  aren't going away, or stop the letters they will hopefully start to listen.  Be sure to mention that your husband is case free, that you are disabled, the cost of visitation (gas, motels, food and time).  Emphasize the fact that you have a Dr's letter and if necessary you can furnish other proof.

3)  I just got my son transferred from (283 miles one way) to 60 miles 1 wayit took  8 months and plenty of stamps, lots of Computer ink and time, but it was well worth the time and expense.  I wrote letters to the Warden of the Unit, the Ombudsman, and a Board Member, and the Regional Director every month.  I talked to Classification over the telephone and they were very nice and courteous to me.  Although I have run across some that are as nasty as I can be.  When I get on my "High Horse", it's hard to stop me.  I write letters to everyone, the more people you write to, the more people know  about your situation.  I have written to Rick Perry, President Bush, my Senators, several members of the Board, ACLU, and many more.

Just try not to let them get the best of you, don't let them bully you, they have to answer to someone, and they hate to get called on the carpet for anything.

This may not get to you for some reason or another, but Good Luck, I'll be praying for you

Linda

On TIFATalk, there are no "powers that be" unless you begin to use profanity or slander.  Has something happened that makes you think that there are such people on TIFA Talk?  Only one additional suggestion to Linda's: be sure to write to the people who can make the decision that you want made.

Hi LJoh ~

I just want to check with you on exactly where you sent your request for a hardship transfer.  If it wasn't sent to Mr. Quarterman's office, it will most likely not get the hoped for result.  Your letter, with the doctor's letter enclosed, should be sent to:

Nathaniel Quarterman
PO Box 99
Huntsville,  TX  77342

I hope that you will consider joining TIFA . . .  there might even be a chapter near where you live.  It helps a lot to talk with others who are going through the same things.

You may certainly feel free to write to President Bush.  Check the White House website for the address.  However, the President has absolutely nothing to do with the assignment of prisoners to units in Texas, if that's what you plan to write him about.  Similarly, Governor Perry does not control the assignment of inmates to units in Texas; both he and the President forward letters to those who are able to make those decisions.

who do I need to write to get anything done?

You need to write to the people who can make the decisions you wish made.  In the case of hardship transfers, the only person who makes that decision is Mr. Nathaniel Quarterman, CID Director.  It takes several months for a decision to be made, since the transfer not only has to do with the family's situation, but with the inmate's disciplinary record and the availability of a bed in the unit to which the transfer would be made.  In addition, if the inmate is participating in any special program, like drug or alcohol abuse, the unit to which he is going must have that program as well.  Typically, that doesn't apply to strictly educational programs, but only to programs that are likely to be part of the requirements for parole.  There is absolutely no harm in writing more than once, enclosing the medical documentation each time, but I wouldn't write more than once a month.  That may move the process faster, if only to get your letters out of Mr. Quarterman's office!  Writing to a state legislator might help, but his/her office will only forward the letter to the right place (or at least to TDCJ, since many legislators have little or no interest in the correctional system).
