This is a big shock for me.  Todd was one of our Storybook dads when he was at the Travis State Jail here in Austin.  I couldn't believe it when I saw his name.  I just talked with his wife, Sue Lane Hughes, who was a TIFA member.  Todd will be remembered with a family service in Beaumont on Friday night.  He leaves behind a sweet daughter, Emily, who so enjoyed hearing her dad's voice reading to her on the tapes.  I'm glad that she will have those tapes to remember him by.

Thank you, B, for sharing that news article.  It meant a lot to me to be able to contact his family.

Scared me silly for a minute, Susan, due to the fact that my son, Joe, is at the Walls Unit now (moved there about 3 weeks ago) . . . .the hair stood up on my neck and arms when I saw the first part of email . . . .Sorry for the Hughes family (wife and daughter) and will be curious how much we learn about this accident . . . .Dave

I know it did scare you, Dave.  I will be very interested to see what kind of investigation is done on this accident.  Todd was a real sweetheart . . . I believe that he was on the Christian dorm at TSJ. Very sad for the family.  We should all say a little prayer of thanks that our loved ones are doing ok . . . not great, but at least ok.  ~ Susan

AMEN !!!!! . . .Susan . . . .I was just visiting with my landlord about some little things I needed done here at the office . .  . he lost his 17 year-old son, senior in high school, back about Sept 10th due to a gunshot suicide. He is having a real hard time dealing with it (5 older daughters and his son).  At least we can still talk to our sons and see them too . . . . lot to be said for that, huh.  . . .prayers going out  . . . take care . . OMG, how heartbreaking for his family. How careless with the life of
one of their charges for TDCJ. This sure didn't rate much
coverage...., because of TDCJ perpetual secrecy policy?

Perhaps TDCJ should be under the watchful eye of OSHA as well as any
other construction entity. Will there be an investigation? Will
there be a report? If carelessness causing someone's death is subject
to prosecution on the outside, then why not on the inside as well.
Why are there different rules and penalties for TDCJ than for ordinary
citizens?

You raise some excellent questions.  I hope that all of you TIFA Talkers will make an effort to follow this story if anything else comes out in the media.  Please post anything that adds to the story on TIFA Talk.
