WACUP (which can be pronounced as wakeup or wac-up or however you prefer it in your native tongue) is my vision of what a media player should be whilst still being compatible with the plug-ins for some of the most popular media players that you are used to. My plan is to include bug fixes, updates of existing features & most importantly new features with the goal to eventually become its own highly compatible media player.
WACUP is heavily based around a plug-in system making it simple to tailor you WACUP install to be what you want it to be. When its finally out of being a preview build an SDK will eventually be offered so new plug-ins can then be made to add additional features.
WACUP is still under development with a functioning preview build that can be downloaded here. As this is pre-release software there can be issues which can be reported in the preview discussion forum. We recommend installing this WACUP Preview build into it's own separate directory from your existing software install until it is feature complete.
This is an independent project & due to the amount of time & effort which is involved, I am accepting donations (and other means of support) to help cover my living costs whilst I'm working on getting this developed & released. As at this time, this is a full-time project for me whilst I see where the future will take me & this project.
Note: Beta builds are intentionally not made publicly available to download & that's the purpose of providing a preview build which will often be an older beta build that is ok for a wider audience to use & where it's issues are known about unlike a new beta build which can be super buggy at times!
The intention of becoming a WACUP beta tester is to help ensure WACUP is ready for a wider audience as part of the preview & eventual non-preview releases. As such being accepted as a beta tester is not guaranteed due to being a single developer & needing to manage the size of the group so it's not too much.
Beta testing also means that you're going to be experiencing broken builds & other annoyances so only if you're ok with such things should you even consider making the request to be a beta tester. If this is just a case of FOMO or thinking it's something magical then being a WACUP beta tester is not for you.
Please Note: Requests to be a beta tester are not guaranteed to be accepted & not following instructions will very likely cause the request to be dismissed. If you can't follow instructions beforehand then how can you be expected to do so if given access & when being asked for information &/or to follow additional steps to resolve issues - it's all to help me & I've had too many waste my time already so I will be keeping things limited & is why the Preview build exists.
Additionally there is a development changelog that is being updated when features / fixes are completed & is provided as a means to see what is going to present in the next (or rather first) non-beta release.
This is a sister site of winampplugins.co.uk (previously nunzioweb.com/daz / daz.ne1.net) which albeit a bit broken & needing some updating shows off a lot of the plug-ins that I created & worked on over the years going all the way back to 2003.
I have over 21 years experience making Winamp plug-ins as well as having worked on Winamp natively on / off since 2007 until the last AOL release. I'm now hoping to do some of the things I used to do for Winamp to try to get back the feeling of fun from getting new build updates that's sadly missing from a lot of software nowadays (aka coding without the corporate BS). I also worked on SHOUTcast from late 2010 until mid-September 2015.
The site icon & header logo you can see at the top of this page (along with others that will be used when WACUP is released) was very kindly made by Victhor. He's also made / updated a number of skins so please do check out his other work.

There's no software in Linux like the current Winamp. If you want something almost similar, try Audacious, BUT the skined interface ONLY supports winamp 2.x skins. I came from a Winamp environment so I can say this, forget about skins and use the default GTK interface and you'll like it, I know I did :)
Since I don't need all the bells and whistles (multi-album, fuzzy sort and search, psychic guessing my mood by the way I'm typing...), just plain old fashioned playlists and "open directory" play (I already have my music organized in my HD...), the QMMP it's all I need: plays all the filetypes I have, can play streams, looks for music lyrics and has the same winAMP appearance key bindings. :)I've tried Audacious, Tomahawk (perhaps not all the time needed to get used to it), and others... And I uninstalled them all: they do much more than I need, so I kept the simplest (still looking for a text-based one! :D). But, for people who needs a lot more, they fill their needs. :)
There is Rhythmbox or VLC.Rythmbox can also be used to sort your music as winamp does.VLC media player,It can also transcode and convert media files, and act as a streaming server over unicast or multicast and IPv4 or IPv6.but doesnt have a good sort function like rythmbox which can sort music like winamp does.
Try Tomahawk. It's a next generation music player. You can call it social music player. It has got great interface. It's feature rich. You will make it your default music player after testing it. It's my challenge. Tomahawk website
The default windows 98 midi port is AWE32 620h for single inst.
Winamp is set to that output as well.
The emulated MPU-401 at 300h cannot be selected in Winamp as output; Winamp only sees physical devices.
Hmmm... Winamp 5.x behaves differently, maybe it is Winamp itself or its midi plugin (ver. 3.01 or above). If I select midi mapper or external MIDI in Winamp, I get no sound at all. I will try older versions then.
So far I could only use DOS midi players (started from Win98 as well). Those work very well.
The other checkbox you referred to is an "AWE32 synth only" restriction, why should I tick that one in? But I will give it a try anyway when I get home.
Thanks for the hints!
Actually, there can be benefits of using newer versions but mostly only if you have at least a semi-modern PCI sound card and faster processor. Then you can use later effect etc. plugins without compatibilty issues.
BUT here is what I have just found out:
the last winamp version with its own soundfont contol interface is 2.82, MIDI plugin version 2.64.
I am experimenting with this right now.
I have lots of MIDI input choices here but none of these is the emulated MPU-401 I want to use.
I think it is because I am using Microsoft drivers, not the Creative ones. That is why I do not have a separate device under Device Manager / Sound, Video and game controllers. I should see an "AWE MPU-401 emulation" device there or sg similar. But I do not want to switch to the crappy Creative drivers just for that ?
OK, you made me start up my win98 rig. Under plugins of winamp 2.91 find
"Nullsoft MIDI player 3.01 [IN_MIDI.DLL]" and click configure. Select "midiOut / SB16 MIDI Out [300] (or 330, depending on your configuration)" and click OK. Load up a midi and try it out.
Also, in Control Panel, Multimedia, find MIDI tab.
For MIDI output select Single instrument and select SB16 MIDI Out [300] (or 330, depending on configuration).
If you do not have SB16 MIDI Out there then right click on My computer, click properties. Select Device Manager tab. Find Creative Sound Blaster 16 Plug and Play (or not P&P, depending on your AWE version). Click properties and select Resources Tab. Disable automatic settings and shuffle through the configurations until you make sure that there is:
Resource type "Input/Output Range", Setting "0330-0331" (or 300 eventually). Restart windows if needed and try to run midi again.
One more thing, the two checkboxes I was referring to are "Allow Wavetable Synthesis only" and "Allow MPU401 Emulation on this device" under "Device" section of AWE control panel. Please, enable both.
In Winamp I can select these three: midout sb16 midiout, mci midiout sb16 midiout and directsound sb16 mid out
(AND a lot of others (microsoft synth, Creative FM synth etc.)
The above three give silence.
A reboot will not solve the problem so I think it must be a driver issue.
DOS midi players set to mpu401 300h can work with the synth, I can hear the difference clearly between soundfonts.
Will look into the issue in the evening.
I have been reading post and seen that it was removed and then re-implemented, somehow I still haven't found out how to scale/resize audacious using winamp skins, it's quite small for me, and I want it to be a little bit bigger, thanks.
I have often wondered what is the slowest 486 CPU which will play full scale mp3s in Windows without skipping using Winamp. I am using the Windows NT Taskmanager in Windows NT 4.0 to monitor CPU load. I have SP6a, the 6a SRP, and all post-SRP updates installed on my 486. I am using a DTK PKM-0033S motherboard with 1024 KB cache, 128 MB memory, and a SCSI HDD. Sound card is an AWE64Gold ISA.
i also believe that winplay3 does no good compared to winamp, except for the lack of directsound support(thats the same as winamp with waveout). but i am not sure if it would be perform better on 486 rigs.
directsound won't do any good unless you use a pci soundcard with hardware audio acceleration.
i always wanted to try playing mp3 with pci soundcard on a 486 rig, but its still on the long way being put together, hopefully can be done in 2-3 months. would you give it a try?
