I just installed QuickBooks 2000 for it's third time from the CD.. Now it is on a new stable Windows 10 tower rather than the XP that was getting a little funky. Fortunately I wrote the Registration Number on the inside of the manual cover because it needs IE4 to register online and that isn't happening. Click on Register by Phone and it pulls up the prompt box to enter the registration number.
Had to boot the old computer into SAFE mode to run a backup to a USB stick, the last one saved to the network drive was a few months ago and I tend to forget backups. Restored that, so all is good. Just in time for year end.
Was thinking though with the new to me computer, just wondering if there are reasons to upgrade my almost 20 year old version to something new. I already figured out how to change my company from GST+PST to HST, ("moved" the company to NB and then "moved" it back to ON and adjusted the rate). I don't write cheques with the software , and I don't use my phone to do my banking.
If there are good reasons for this old dog to learn new tricks is there an upgrade program for existing registered users or do I have to buy new software outright. Mine's a micro-business run from home and I tend to look at cost/benefit ratios pretty closely. What I have works for me (owner/book keeper/engineering manager/IT guru/groundskeeper/lead fabricator/chief cook & bottle washer). Pretty durable for 20 year old coding, someone deserves a thumbs up emoji but I don't see where I can add one to the post.
Registration of the new install was no problem, done already. I have the original Reg No. written on the inside cover of the inch-thick printed manual that came in the box with the CD. I still have all the original packaging and documentation. Ultimate backup when you have it physically present. Already found the back door, and it wasn't locked.
Online is where the rest of the world is going, "cloud" data but the unfortunate truth in Canada is that if you don't live in a "city" your options for accessing the "cloud" are severely limited. Out here in the country I have to use mobile data from my phone, USB tethered to my computer(s) or router to share data with my computers. Yes, mobile data. No, there is no Internet if my phone isn't connected to my computer somehow. Yes, I am pretty good at it and have all my Mac and PC and Android stuff married into some weird network that allows them all to work together. I just don't need to use the power of the "cloud" to do monthly books, HST and a report for my accountant at year end to do my taxes. Call me practical.
I also looked at how long support lasts for a new registered product. Support for the 2017 QB version disappears at the end of 1Q 2020. And for the first 60 day "one call only" free support for a new registration .." Intuit reserves the right to limit the telephone call to one hour and one question or issue." And if I had 2 questions?
Thanks for links to the resources, it is appreciated . I thought I should at check it out, since it has been so long. It's like cooked carrots - I eat them once a year just to be sure - and yes, they still taste yucky. I will just keep using my registered, legal and supported (by the print documentation that came in the box) QB2000 ... maybe until cooked carrots begin to taste good.

When it comes to installing QuickBooks Desktop on a new computer, it means you'll have to register the product again, as you've encountered. For older versions of the program, the register online option won't work. There is a backdoor way that will work which we may be able to use in this case. If you would like to consider upgrading your Desktop version or even switching to QuickBooks Online as Fiat Lux suggests, you'll likely need to go through our Data Services department. Because you have the 2000 version, there isn't a way to directly upgrade or convert the file yourself because the program needs to "step up" or upgrade through the yearly versions in order to be able to do so.
With what you're describing in terms of the features you're looking for, QuickBooks Online may indeed be a good fit. I know you need to factor budget in as well, so what I'm going to do is leave you a link that outlines each of our QuickBooks products. The only thing to keep in mind while reviewing these is that QuickBooks Self-Employed is a standalone product that cannot be converted from or to another version of the program. So if you were interested in that version, it would mean starting fresh.

Since the beginning of the program in 1992, activities in Categories A through E above have required registration by law. Category F was added by regulation beginning with the 2000-2001 registration year.
Clarifications: The HMR apply to persons who offer for transportation or transport by highway, rail, water, or air. Water transportation does not include hazardous materials loaded or carried on board a vessel without benefit of containers or labels and received and handled by the vessel carrier without mark or count. This type of shipment, for which the vessel is the container, such as LNG or oil tanker vessels, is under the authority of the U.S. Coast Guard in the Department of Homeland Security.
The term "person" means each separate legal entity, such as a corporation, partnership, association, or LLC or LP. This means that a separately incorporated subsidiary (or LLC or LP) must register if it engages in the specified activities, even when a parent company is also required to register. All locations and vehicles operated by a person are covered by that person's registration.
Requirements for Hazardous Waste Generators: All hazardous wastes subject to the Hazardous Waste Manifest Requirements of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are hazardous materials. A hazardous waste generator must register if you meet the requirements identified above.
After you click on the "Search" button, a list of possible companies will be displayed. The most recent registration number for each company is given next to the company name. Click on the "Details" button at the end of the line to see a short report of the company information with each of the registration numbers associated with that company record. The most recent registration is given at the bottom of the list. Click "View/Print" to see and print a copy of the certificate.
Under the federal hazardous material transportation law (49 U.S.C. 5101 et seq.), offerors and transporters of certain types and quantities of hazardous materials, including hazardous wastes, are required to file a registration statement with the U.S. Department of Transportation and to pay an annual fee. This program began in 1992 and is administered by the Associate Administrator for Hazardous Materials Safety, Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA). The registration regulations are found at 49 CFR 107.601-107.620.
The fee provides funds for grants distributed to states and Indian tribes for hazardous materials emergency response planning and training and to certain professional organizations for training purposes through the Hazardous Materials Grants Program. Your fee is helping communities prepare for hazardous materials incidents or other emergencies that may occur.
