Investigations into the cat and dog meat trade have exposed horrific cruelty. Cats have been documented crammed into cages, deprived of food and water, transported in appalling conditions and slaughtered in front of other terrified animals. Some animals caught up in this trade have even been stolen from families or taken from the streets before being sold for their meat.
In the Philippines, the law already prohibits the killing of cats for meat. But there is a serious gap. Unlike dogs, there is no specific national prohibition covering the wider trade in cats for human consumption — including the buying, selling, transporting and serving of cats or cat meat.
That loophole leaves cats without the clear, comprehensive protection they deserve. Cats should never be captured, transported, slaughtered or sold for their meat. The law should make that unmistakably clear and ensure every part of this cruel trade is explicitly prohibited.
Birgitt, will you sign now to demand that lawmakers in the Philippines close the loophole and explicitly outlaw the cat meat trade?
