Everyuser-built track that is added to the marble

run increases the total length of the over all track.

With increasing length more and more special bricks

get unlocked to allow you to build even more tracks!

Best.group.STEAM.project.ever. Hands down this playground sized DIY Marble Run was one of the highlights of the STEAM camp I ran this summer. Not only did the kids get really excited about sending handfuls of marbles down the run, they were enthusiastic about building it AND problem solving when the marbles got stuck.

A central component of STEAM education is learning from your peers and working as a team to solve problems. And nothing encourages teamwork like a GIANT project! We had kids ages 4-13 working on this, happily assisting each other and trying out ideas. The kids also evenly divided themselves into various roles, switching off from testers to designers to helpers and it was a wonderful process to watch unfold!

Marble runs are also an easy way to explore the scientific concept of velocity, which is the speed of an object going in a certain direction. The marbles will not make it down the run if they have too little velocity, meaning they slow down too much over bumps and turns to continue moving OR if the track cannot contain the velocity of the marble. If you have a marble running very fast on either a steep angle or a track section with low sides, it will hop off the track.

Kids love marble runs. Period. I have two store bought marble runs and we have made our own version out recycled materials here and playing with them is always met with enthusiasm! Here are some suggestions for more marble run fun:

[video: scene fades into the camera panning up a PlayBooster playground with Vibe components. Children climb and play on the different playground activities. Camera pulls back for a full view of children playing all of the playground. Camera switches to a full view of the five playground Vibe roofs. The roofs are a rounded triangular shape with a smaller metal triangular shape with grated holes. Scene switches to a young girl spinning on a Saddle Spinner. Camera switches to the end of the playground as a girl spins on a Saddle Spinner as another girl climbs up the Logo Climber behind her. Scene switches to a side view of two boys climbing across a Canyon Climber. Scene switches to a front view of a girl as she slides down a Double Wave Slide. Camera switches to a pan down the Logo Climber where a boy climbs up towards the playground decking. Scene switches to a side view of the playground of children playing all over the different playground activities. A boy slides down a Double Swoosh Slide, a second boy climbs up the Logo Climber, and children run and play all around. The camera focuses on the boy climbing on the Logo Climber as he sits on it. Scene switches to a young girl as she spins the gears on the Optigear Vibe Panel. The girl shouts and grunts as she quickly spins the gear of the panel. Scene switches to a boy as he stands by a Color Splash Vibe Panel. The boy looks back at the camera as the rainbow colors spin around inside the panel. A child shouts in the background. Scene switches to a ground view up to children climbing on the Canyon and SpaceWalk rope climber. Camera switches to a ground view up the side of the Logo Climber as a girl climbs down. Camera switches to a ground view up through the ropes of the SpaceWalk Climber. The camera pans to a young girl as she stands on the ropes of the climber. I wanted to share some pictures of our trip to the new accessible playground in Ann Vann Middlesworth Park in Hillsborough. The playground provides a great sensory and movement experience to all children regardless of ability. The entrance to the playground structure is a ramp. No stairs in sight.

Further along were two great stations. One was a marble run that had a few different levers to start and stop the marbles. The second was a race track with two cars that could be moved by turning a dial.

At the top of the ramp was a tunnel that led to the larger section of the structure. The tunnel was bumpy on the inside rather than the typical smooth tunnel. On this side there were a great variety of climbing walls and structures, in addition to a slide. Steps also lead up to this section.

There was also a board with different animals engraved and their names in braille. On the other side of the board were numbers written in braille. My daughter liked tracing the animal outlines and talking about the body parts.

Near the playground there is a swing set with an adapted swing. It is next to the other swings where children who need that extra support can swing with their friends and siblings. The ground under the swings is a soft bouncy surface that is also under the playground structure.

I wanted to challenge Fred for his marble, a purie the color of a flawless ruby. He won it from John during recess. For one month a year, right after spring break, the Burley Glenwood Elementary School principal allowed us to hold marble tournaments on the playground.
