A huge quantity of books previously unavailable to the public was released starting in 2019 thanks to the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act of 1998. Because of an amendment to that act, works published between 1923 and 1977 can enter the public domain 95 years after their creation. Many of the sites listed below give access to the tens of thousands of books (plus movies, songs, and cartoons) available under this act. Downloads should be free and without retribution under U.S. copyright law.
For years I have downloaded library e-books (epub format) to Adobe Digital Editions and then moved them to my Nook. Early in December 2016, they would not download to ADE and I get the message "unable to download. License Server Communications Problem: E_STREAM_ERROR". My daughter lives in another town and is having the same problem trying to borrow e-books from her library. How do we fix this? Our libraries just want to say it is a problem with our computers and/or Nooks!
I have been working on the same problem for over two weeks. I have worked with two library districts. With one of the librarian;s sat with me and tried going through the chat for over 2 hours that day and I spent .5 hours today, but in the end they-3 different people on Adobe chat-sent me here saying it would be taken care of. I have updated my version to the latest, but the glitch seems to be that the email even in the new version is an old one that I have not had access to for years. I asked for the 2 of the people in the chats to change it or fix it, they would send me to the forums. I am getting very frustrated as this is my only way to download books.
I have the same problem, I could not download an ebook from the Library to Digital Editions, I was told by a library person that there is problems with older versions of ADE and that I needed to un-install and re-install, I did this managed to get through and Authorize my Computer (Desk top PC) only to find that I still can not open a library book in ADE, with a technical person within the library who looks after the audio and e section, when going through stuff to do with ADE we discovered that we have a problem with the ACSM file it is not connected with ADE I asked the Adobe technical chat line who are getting paid for sitting there NOT answering questions and telling me I need to speak with an expert in the forum, to which I have only found this page so far .... so not much help there but I defiantly need help to get to be able to read my books again on my desk top PC
What I tried deauthorizing/reauthorizing ADE on my computer, uninstalling ADE 4.5.2/reinstalling ADE 4.5.3, uninstalling 4.5.3/reinstalling 3.0, uninstalling 3.0/reinstalling 4.0 (Installation issues for Adobe Digital Editions 4.0). I made sure that acsm and epub files were associated with ADE.
I finally read on one post (My digital editions has stopped working ) that once ADE crashes, it tries to reopen in its previous state and crashes again. I did as that poster suggested: I copied my ADE folder to another location in My Documents, then deleted the original folder. When I tried to reopen ADE and download a book--it finally worked and I was able to download my library book!! While reloading the books from my backup file individually hasn't worked, I have been able to download additional books from a second library into ADE with no problem so far (fingers crossed that that continues).
P.S. I am able to download and view this particular book using my iPhone 11's Book app. So this issue seems to be partial to Mac computers. However, I wish to continue reading and experiencing these books on my 15" MacBook Pro - it's not the same viewing manga on a little phone screen.
I had this problem with the book about about a month ago. I sent the question into Apple and they sent me a response telling me to go into books on my iMac and check for the book again with the cloud and click on it and that should work. I had tried this several times before with no luck and then when I tried it after talking with them it worked perfectly.
The other day I bought two more books and am now having the same problem again. Only this time the trick hasn't worked. I was able to read the book on my iPad but I couldn't download it to my iMac. Some weird glitch going on.
This is the second time in a week that I have purchased books from iBooks and they have failed to download despite apple taking the money for the items. On the first occasion I contacted Support and the problem was resolved immediately but today I contacted apple support via chat and within seconds the chat was terminated by apple. I now find that I cannot connect to apple support which is unavailable. This is the best ever advert for Kindle! Come on apple, you really need to up your game as this is totally unacceptable. ?
As I wrote previously I had a problem downloading the book to my iMac even though it worked perfectly on my iPad and I contacted Apple and shortly thereafter I was able to download the book correctly. Then I bought two more books and the same thing happened, unable to download them on the iMac. I contacted Apple again and was on the phone with them and they fixed the problem pretty quickly by going into my account and doing something. And now they are helping me with a couple of albums I paid for but were missing a couple of songs that I had previously downloaded before the entire album came out.
had this problem too on my various devices, bought a book on one device - stuck downloading on another. I also ran into not being able to download books I had bought years ago. After spending a couple of days with Apple Support signing in and signing out of my device - they had me wipe my iPad mini and reinstall everything fresh (not from a backup). Problem solved but all my apps and setup on my iPad mini were gone. I realized that my iPad mini had been making back ups to the cloud so I wiped it again and reinstalled everything from a back up previous to the date that the download error occurred. Problem also solved. Not really a solution but a work around. They still don't know what caused the error but at least I can now read and synch all my books between my devices.
