Please help me with my file. Originally created in MicrosoftOffice Word, it first crashed my table of contents several times after saving in Writer. Eventually it worked, and after that I add one textbox to the page with that table, and create normal pdf of it. But now I cannot open the file. On my computer with windows10 it cannot be opened with LO, Writer crashes, whereas MO Word can open it for reading - all pages are available, but pieces of text on them looks overlapped. On my other computer with win8 and the same LO version, Writer says I have no rights to redact, so it opens my file in reading mod - there are only one page available, and it is the table of content (first page), which is not working, since there is no content exept for this page. I do not understand what is going on, and how to fix my document, and where is my data.

Since some of the more recent updates on my laptop, I've had issues opening any Word documents on my computer. If I double click, ctrl-O, or even click "Open with Preview" on a .docx file, it will switch to the Preview app without actually opening the document.

Well, I have to correct what I said. I found a couple .docx files that would open in Catalina. Some that wouldn't. In any case, haven't found any that open in Monterey although, they will open in Quick Look. Strange.

If the user what's to make " Preview " the Default Application to always open the Microsoft Words documents, you will have to change the Default File Association from xxx Application to Preview Application.

Preview will open Word .doc/.docx documents thru macOS 11.6.6, though the last operating system to provide Preview on the Finder Open With sub-menu was Mojave 10.14.6. I have tested with macOS 10.11.6, 10.13.6, 10.14.6, and the last security update for Catalina 10.15.7 and they all open Word (.doc/.docx) documents in Preview. They will likely also open Excel and Powerpoint documents too as I have done that in the past, but not with all of the mentioned operating systems. Snow Leopard 10.6.8 does not offer this Preview feature.

On my mac it shows a docx file and says "Open with Microsoft Word", but if I go and change the default application to Pages, or TextEdit, then that is what Quicklook will say, e.g. "Open with Pages".

I've had success unzipping and examining the interior of a .docx file, but I can't seem to get the re-zipping to work properly. I've tried no compression (command line: zip -0r ...), the archive utility, and a 7zip plugin but none of that works. All of the .docx files I create won't open in the original programs, even when I don't change a single file. Any tips?

It is important that the files that make up the docx are not within another folder, i.e. [Content_Types].xml must be in the root of the resulting zipped file. A similar question has been asked on StackOverflow.

If you have those files within another directory inside the zip or docx file, it won't work. Note that I don't get the customXml folder on an empty Word document, but the report I originally tested with did have it. You may have some more (or less) directories.

I have been searching on and off for days for an answer to this, but all the advice seems to be outdated. I am using the Android Nextcloud App v3.11.0 and connecting to my Nextcloud server on Hostiso.

How do I work around this problem or fix it? I only started working with this a month or two ago. I think I used to be able to view spreadsheets a few weeks ago. Is it an issue with the Android 10 update?

Or you can install Collabora office android app. You choose to open a doc and it will open one of your files managers. And from your files manager (depends on which one) you can connect to your nextcloud directly and open your file.

I am doing some marking that requires me to open .docx file created using Microsoft Office 2007+. OpenOffice doesn't seem to be doing a good job for it, so far, hid all the images in the documents. Any idea if there is a program that is guaranteed to open .docx file correctly? Please pay attention to the word "guaranteed", because otherwise I might not be fair to the students.

What should work -- though I wouldn't stake too much on this -- is to get a Windows Live account with Microsoft, upload the .docx file to your Microsoft "skydrive", and use the "Edit in Browser" option (which surprisingly sometimes works even on Linux). Since you're using Microsoft's own software, everything should be OK. I often get something to the effect that the document contains things that only work in standard Word, however, and then it won't let you open it. (Microsoft trying to get money out of you, of course.)

Kingsoft office (free proprietary program, available on .deb and .rpm) seems opens .docx more accurately than LO 4.1 and loads .pptx even better. I've tried this program to open a .docx files and compared it to LO 4.1, but I don't study it further to open other .docx files, but I think it will open other .docx better, you can try it.

I also had have tried IBM Symphony maybe approximately 3 year ago, I abandoned it and sticked to OpenOffice.org (OOo) (at that time LibreOffice is not present yet), then I try again latest Symphony maybe 1 year ago just for review, I think there are improvements, but sticked again to LibreOffice (at that time I've change from OOo to LO) but I think I will prefer the Kingsoft and LO 4.1, LO 4.1 feel faster and stable now.

Just an update. So if others having the same problem this may help to resolve the issue.
I've reached out to the Support Team and after some time we able to find the cause of the problem.

The problem has got to do with the DEFAULT BROWSER APP used in Android. Im using Opera browser as the default browser app for my Android Phone.

The support team able to recreate the problem with their demo app and it seems that if we do not use Chrome Browser as a default, the problem will persist.

Its not the definite solution, but to solve this issue either we need to delete other browser app or set Chrome as the default browser app in Android phone, otherwise the problem will persist with files extension using DOCX, DOC, XLSX, XLS, PPT, PPTX.

Thanks again for the help from the community & support team.

Yes, ive search up in my phone file manager and theres no file downloaded onto my phone.

Im not sure what cause this problem. It only fails to download docx, doc, xls, xlsx files.
Ive also changed the respected google drive folder permission to ""public/anyone with the link"

I'd suggest you to check Opera's settings about downloading files or also try to force open the link from files so that it opens the link instead of a webview.
Also check which Webview is being used in your device.

After receiving an email with a docx file attachment, I was unable to open it. The error message says, Adobe Reader cannot open ....docx either because it is not a supported file type or the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded). This is a very important document and more may follow soon. Should I uninstall Adobe Reader, then try to open the document ansd save it to the computer before reinstalling Adobe?

I tried to follow these instructions but when I got to Microsoft Office/Office 14 folder there was no WinWord .exe to choose. I entered this in File name but it said the file could not be found. Was there something wrong in my sequence?

The .docx file I chose was the won I cannot open. I had downloaded it to documents but it still won't open. After trying the new suggestion (Program Files (x86)/Microsoft Office/Office 14) a file search came up empty. Tomorrow, I'll try to contact Microsoft to find out why. Thanks for your help. I'm sure if I ever manage to locate WinWord.exe it will work.

I'm not asking you to choose it from the list of recent files, but to choose OPEN, then find the folder with the file in it, and select the file. If the file isn't shown, then it isn't a DOCX file at all.

There is Apache POI project for working with MS Office files. DOCX file is just a zip file with series of XML files inside, so you can unzip the file and work with XML. The XML spec (Open XML) is known.

I have used both docx4j and Apache's POI libraries, if you are working with .docx I would recommend .docx4j. Automated alot of the process of creating a .docx.
There is a great exmaple here : -complex-word-docx on how to create a .docx using the docx4j package.

Hi y'all! I'm having some problems opening docx files from my remote mount of Google Drive, when I open a file from LibreOffice from the mounted folder, it just pop ups an error message saying the following: "The lock file could not be created for exclusive access by LibreOffice, due to missing permission to create a lock file location or lack of free disk space. Select Notify to open read-only and get notified when the document becomes editable."
I don't know if I have to set any permission or something with a command, I'm new at this so any help helps me to improve
