The first season of the ABC American television drama series Revenge premiered on September 21, 2011, and concluded on May 23, 2012, with a total of 22 episodes. The series was created by Mike Kelley and is inspired by the Alexandre Dumas novel The Count of Monte Cristo.[1] The series stars Madeleine Stowe and Emily VanCamp.
Emily Thorne (Emily VanCamp) comes to the Hamptons, renting a home next to the Grayson family to enjoy a bright summer. However, it is revealed that Emily has been to the Hamptons before as a little girl. In reality, Emily is Amanda Clarke, whose father was framed for a crime he did not commit and sent to prison for life. She was permanently separated from him and never saw him again. Now, she has returned to the Hamptons, intent on getting revenge against those who wronged her and her father, the top of that list being Victoria Grayson (Madeleine Stowe), matriarch of the Grayson family and the woman whom her father loved and who, in the end, betrayed him.
As she sets her plan in motion, Emily tries to navigate the upper society to destroy those who betrayed her father. But the further she goes, the more her emotions get involved and the more she questions her motives and the moves she makes.
In January 2011, ABC ordered the script to pilot. In March 2011, actress Emily VanCamp was cast as the lead character, and shortly afterwards it was released that Ashley Madekwe was cast in the series.[2] Madeleine Stowe and Henry Czerny joined the cast as well.[3] Max Martini and Robbie Amell joined the cast as Frank Stevens, a private investigator and Adam, a wealthy student who is hoping to attend Yale.[4][5] James Tupper replaced Marc Blucas in the role of Emily's father, after Blucas was forced to drop out due to his commitment on Necessary Roughness. Recurring Gossip Girl star Connor Paolo was cast as a series regular playing the character of Declan Porter.[6] Former Nikita star Ashton Holmes landed a recurring role as Tyler Barrol, a Harvard classmate of Daniel Grayson.[7]
Dorothy Rabinowitz of The Wall Street Journal praised the series, writing that "The arrival of one pure and unadulterated drama about a passion as old as man is something to celebrate. That's particularly true when that drama is as spellbinding in its satisfyingly gaudy way, as Revenge turns out to be", whilst awarding particular praise to Van Camp for a "beguiling and entirely chilling study in revenge lust."[34] Writing for The New York Times, Alessandra Stanley compared the series favorably with Gossip Girl, concluding that it has "just enough campy suspense to be enjoyable."[35] Episode 5 of the series received particular acclaim, with C. Orlando of TV Fanatic writing that "Revenge took things to a whole new level this week", and noting with reference to the set-up of David Clarke that "Victoria seems the only one with a conscience".[36]
The series made the covers of Parade, Entertainment Weekly and TV Guide, and was featured in Rolling Stone,[39] Vanity Fair, Vogue, People, Us Weekly, Cosmopolitan, Seventeen, and Teen Vogue magazine. The season finale "Reckoning" was met with critical acclaim by fans and critics as well, calling the episode "the best season finale of 2012".[citation needed]
The first season of Revenge was nominated for Favorite New TV Drama at the 2012 People's Choice Awards.[62] Madeleine Stowe received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a TV drama.[63]
The first season of Revenge was released on DVD on August 21, 2012, in region 1. The set includes all 22 episodes and bonus material such as "Nolan's World: An Interview With The Infamous Nolan Ross"; "Lifestyles Of The Rich And Dangerous: The Making Of REVENGE"; "Hamptons Bound: Preparing For Life At The Shore"; deleted scenes and bloopers.[65]
Pretending to be Emily Thorne, Amanda goes after the Graysons, wealthy neighbors in the Hamptons who she believes are responsible for framing her father for treachery when she was a young girl. With computer hacker Nolan Ross (Gabriel Mann) assisting her, a reconnection with her childhood friend Jack Porter (Nick Wechsler), and new love interest Daniel Grayson (Josh Bowman) from the very family she's targeting, Amanda hatches a deceptive plan to prove the truth.
Since the series finale, fans have been wondering what the cast of this dramatic and scandalous series is up to nowadays. Some of the cast held a "pool day" reunion in 2018, per VanCamp's Instagram post, causing a stir among fans who began prompting ABC to bring back the series, and in December 2018, VanCamp and Bowman, who had been dating after meeting on the series, got married, with many of their cast mates attending the ceremony. Here's what else the cast of Revenge has been up to.
On Revenge, Emily VanCamp portrayed the lead character Emily Thorne, who was really Amanda Clarke attempting to get revenge. Fans might also recognize her from being cast as a nurse, Nicolette Niven, in The Resident, which she began starring in, in 2018. Prior to that role she appeared in the films, The Girl in the Book and Boundaries.
Her character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Sharon Carter, was heavily involved in the Captain America movies and reappeared in the Disney+ series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. VanCamp's most recent role is in the 2023 film, Miranda's Victim, where she plays Ann Weir, the mother of a young woman who was abducted and raped in the 1960s.
Madeleine Stowe plays Victoria Grayson, the head lady of the Grayson family, whom Emily/Amanda blames for her father's criminal issues in Revenge. Following her work on the series, she had a guest appearance on 12 Monkeys, then landed the role of Margot Weston on Soundtrack. She is set to appear in the upcoming Welcome to Derry series, which is a prequel of the film, It, based on the book of the same name by Stephen King, and scheduled for release in 2024.
Gabriel Mann plays Nolan Ross, Emily's best friend and a computer hacker who assists her in Revenge. Starting out as a model, the now-actor has had quite a bit of television success, receiving roles in Ray Donovan as Jacob Waller, Damnation as Martin Eggers Hyde, What/If as Gage Scott, and Batwoman as Tommy Elliot/Hush. He most recently appeared in the television series Blacklist for a three-episode recurring arc as Ilya Koslov.
Prior to starring on Revenge, Nick Wechsler, who portrays Jack Porter, Amanda's best friend from childhood, appeared in Roswell. The actor has made a bit of a career from his guest appearances, having roles on series like The Player, Chicago P.D., and Dynasty. He then took on roles in Shades of Blue, where he portrayed Cole, This is Us, and All Rise. Wechsler most recently appeared in three episodes of the hit Prime Video series The Boys as Blue Hawk in 2022.
British actor Josh Bowman portrayed Daniel Grayson from 2011 to 2014 in Revenge, then made a guest appearance in the final season in 2015. After the series ended, he starred in the films Level Up and Escaping the Madhouse: The Nellie Bly Story, as well as appearing in the series, Time After Time, as a version of Jack the Ripper, and Our Girl, where he played Dr. Antonio.
Henry Czerny stars as Conrad Grayson, the husband/eventual ex-husband of Victoria and father to Daniel, in the series Revenge. Since the series' end, Czerny has starred in Remember, Ready or Not, and The Other Half. The actor is probably most well known for his work in the Mission: Impossible franchise, where he recently resumed his role as Eugene Kittridge for Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, and is set to return in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part Two. Czerny also had recurring roles on Quantico, as Matthew Keyes, and Sharp Objects, as Alan Crellin.
After appearing as Daniel's sister Charlotte Grayson on Revenge, Christa B. Allen went on to appear in a recurring role on Baby Daddy. She also scored roles in the films The Valley, Dead on Arrival, and When Vows Break. Allen's most recent work includes the 2021 made for TV movie, Christmas for Keeps, alongside Ryan Rottman, and the upcoming miniseries, Kontaxt.
After portraying the wannabe socialite Ashley Davenport in Revenge, English actress Ashley Madekwe appeared in the television series Salem as Tituba. She went on to have a recurring role in Umbrella Academy, and had a part in the miniseries Four Weddings and a Funeral. Before landing the lead role of Simone Garland in Tell Me A Story, Madekwe appeared in County Lines and The Morning After Thrill. Her most recent project was in the 2023 series Dr. Death, starring alongside Joshua Jackson (Dawson's Creek).
The actress has a few producing credits to her name: Un homme mort, Polytechnique, and Paul Qubec. Most recently, Vanasse has appeared in both the 2023 miniseries Bones of Crows: The Series, and the 2023 television series, Hidden Assets.
* Jenna Coleman first found fame playing Jasmine Thomas in Emmerdale for four years before moving on to Waterloo Road. She then played Clara in Doctor Who and Queen Victoria in ITV series Victoria before starring in the huge hit The Serpent, about the real-life killer Charles Sobhraj (see picture below). She's also had roles in The Cry, Inside No.9, Titanic and Dancing on the Edge.
Episode 2: The Other Woman
Liv and Will have made it to Yosemite, but Liv's plot is thrown off course by the shock arrival of the other woman, Cara, which brings the deceit of the past very much into the present. As Liv and Cara's rivalry intensifies, more revelations emerge, and with Liv's marriage hanging by a thread, revenge becomes the only option.
Episode 3: Repent At Leisure
Liv wakes to the crushing realisation of what she has done. The need for an alibi is crucial, but as a search mission begins, there is a nightmarish surprise waiting at her door.
