I have a plugin that worked under tiddlywiki 2.4, but quit when I
upgraded to 2.5.3 - is there a guide to upgrading the js code
someplace or a possible likely reason why it quit?

Can you provide some specifics?
Perhaps you just need the DeprecatedFunctionsPlugin:

This is the plugin in question:

It worked under 2.4.1, but now that I've upgraded to 2.5.3 it no
longer does. I'm new to tw plugin development and don't yet have a
grasp of what exactly is going on.

I'm afraid I'll have to ask you to be more specific; how exactly does it
not work?
That particular plugins works just fine for me in TiddlyWiki 2.5.3.

now I'm confused - I opened an empty 2.5.3 TiddlyWiki and imported the plugin again and now it works.

Thanks for the assistance, even if it was only to jog me to try again.

If you must choose between two evils,
pick the one you've never tried before.
