Devs,

In this reply Saq Suggested I start a thread to invite suggestions on a name and show a demo of "Active/Focused" Tiddler handling.

Please See my demo here on top of a copy of Tiddlywiki.com Less that 5 mins and you should see the whole thing.

I understand why focus often a technical term may clash with this function but it really is about the focus ones mind gives to a tiddler.

Have you a better name for the tiddler selected in this example? Please let me know

So Far I have;

  • Focused Tiddler
  • Active Tiddler
  • Selected tiddler
  • Target Tiddler
This "tool" really is helpful to a designer working on a dozen or so tiddlers, be they in the story or not.

I would love your feedback

"Target tiddler" / "set target" terminology seems appropriate. Would even work with your icons.

Inappropriate use of the term focus will lead to misunderstanding, potentially having to field a lot of related questions from confused users, and renaming your terminology when the core starts keeping track of which tiddler has focus.

How about "Current Tiddler"?  I know it's used *internally* within wikitext code as <<currentTiddler>>,
but in this case, we aren't referring to coding, but rather, as you noted, what the user's *mind* is
currently attending to.

I think current tiddler in this context is OK and should not be confusing as Eric points out.

I noticed that Tony used the terms "focus" and "set focus", so "target" "set target" felt like a good but also easy replacement. Could just as easily be "current" and "set current".

To me, "current tiddler" would definitely confuse things. The systems meaning of current tiddler, i.e the variable, takes some time to understand conceptually and referring to this as something else is just not a good idea IMO. I think the big boys here are just way more skilled in coding so they have a much clearer grasp of the concepts than the typical user does.

I think "Active tiddler" makes sense and I believe rhymes well with what :active in CSS means.

"Active tiddler" was my first suggestion.  I only added "Current tiddler" as another alternative.

I still like "Active tiddler" as my first choice.

Folks,

I am starting to side with active tiddler as target is too "aggressive". As in the demo the fields tab shows, interacting with the "active" tiddler has a lot of possibilities. The Side Editor, status setting and other controls could be provided for the active tiddler in the side bar.

A new window, floating window or modal could interact with that active tiddler as well.

Regards
Tony
