Arc Acorn discovered that Google Groups has several permission settings that I didn't know about. I've now made the following configuration changes to both of these discussion groups:

! Posting Permissions

Change "Add references" from "None" to "All members of group". I've no idea what "references" are but thought they may be worth exploring

Change "Post Announcements" from "None" to "All members of group". Might be useful (we may want to restrict it to managers, I guess)

Change "Me Too Topic" from "None" to "All members of group".

Change "Post Rich Text Format" from "None" to "All members of group".

! Moderation Permissions

Change "Edit Own Posts" from "None" to "All members of group"

Change "Mark Duplicate" from "None" to "All members of group"

Change "Mark Favorite Reply On Any Other User's Topics" from "None" to "All members of group"

Let me know how it goes,

Best wishes

Jeremy

I can't see any difference. Where are those new "features"? Like Me Too Topic or Mark favorite Reply?

I'm not the expert on Google Groups, I'm afraid, but I guess these things are documented in the Google Groups help.

For me at least I'm seeing an "edit" option for my own posts.

Best wishes

Jeremy

Excellent! The times of complaining about google groups have come to an end.

Best wishes, Tobias.

Ok, now it is working for me. Maybe it took some time.

IMO ok.

Change "Mark Duplicate" from "None" to "All members of group"

Only group managers should be able to do this.

--------

Every post has a mark as complete now. IMO only the OP author, managers should be able to set this option

Good stuff! - but I am not seeing an Edit button in the dev forum.

I'd suggest we see how it goes first and if it's not working out or never used (properly) it can be disabled again.

Best wishes, Tobias.

Hello Jeremy sorry to dig up such an old post, but one thing I've noticed from other Google groups is that in the reply notification emails there is a direct link to view the conversation on the web
It reads something like "To view this discussion on the web visit" followed by a direct link to the relevant thread, which I find to be a very quick and useful shortcut.
I was wondering if there's any group setting there that can enable this in this group, currently it only links to unsubscribe, and a few more.

Hi Duarte

Thanks for the suggestion, you were quite right, there is a setting to add a link to the message, now enabled both for [tw] and [twdev].

This topic came up in the hangout this week, prompted by Mat having edited a post after he'd sent it, and me only seeing the original, uncorrected email version of the posting. I'm beginning to see that this rather pernicious problem may lie behind the decision of some groups to intentionally disable editing of posts (perhaps except by administrators).

Best wishes

Jeremy

Thanks for enabling it, makes visiting the group a lot easier. :)

Hey wait, is it in effect already? These two latest notification emails don't show any links at all, not even the old unsubscribe ones.

Please keep the editing feature. What happened in my thread there (sorry) is not typical and I find it very valuable to be able to correct things - typically minor improvements to the text.

In other groups where the nature of the subject is such that people can be held accountable for what they write in a more serious way (maybe even involving money etc) - there I can see how disabling edit is good. But we almost exclusively deal with matter of facts and we're all here voluntarily, so please keep the editing option open.

Thank you.

Hi Mat

Please keep the editing feature. What happened in my thread there (sorry) is not typical and I find it very valuable to be able to correct things - typically minor improvements to the text.

But the concern is that some percentage of the readers will *never see* your corrections, because they are reading the post via email. It only becomes a problem if the percentage is high enough, and the corrections are more than cosmetic but still, it's quite a huge trap for the unwary.

Anyhow I'm not suggesting that we turn off editing at this point, but I'm interested to watch out for any further unintended consequences.

Best wishes

Jeremy

I'm also seeing empty footers, and yet the web interface is showing the intended settings. Perhaps it needs time to settle down,

Best wishes

They are back now. indeed it probably needed some time to settle down.
I'd also vote for keeping the editing around, since I like keeping notifications in my email for convenience, but I end up always checking the replies in the web version anyway.
Old habits from those forums which say "a new post has been made, you will receive no further notifications until you visit ###" , also helpful in this case because of possible editing.

I agree with Mat, editing is really useful. Especially adding results that emerged in the discussion to the OP.
