TiddlyWiki re-occurring fault and recovery failure.

Can the https://github.com/TiddlyWiki/TiddlyFox be depended upon to locate the latest and definitive tiddly-fox add on for firefox ?

I understand that the FireFox Extension 1.0alpha03 is available in FireFox add-ons and 1.0alpha08 at the above (as at 2013-02-21)

Here is the info about a problem I have

Backgroud
tiddlywiki 2.6.6
tiddlyFox 1.0alpha8
many plugins

Isse and steps to address
tiddlyfox on FF 18.0.2 problem saving - exported changes to attempt recovery
Reload firefox and tiddlywiki (loosing changes) and attempt to import exported tiddlers
Cant import, :error during local file access: TypeError: netscape.security.PrivilegeManager is undefined"
Upgrade FF to 19.0
Update of tiddlyFox ?
https://github.com/TiddlyWiki/TiddlyFox and latest xpi file (month ago) downloaded
Cant open xpi "This extension could not be installed because it appears to be corrupt
still can't import
Save Changes working again but can't recover my exported tiddlers (except Manually)
- This has happened before and getting really frustrating

PS I no longer see the tiddlyFox prompt at tiddlywiki load

Thanks in advance and Regards

Well I can help you on this one:
"Cant import, :error during local file access: TypeError: netscape.security.PrivilegeManager is undefined"
Firefox deprecated the netscape.security...etc in version 17 you "can" re-enable it in 18 using hidden perf's but it's 100% gone in 19+ so not a good work around.

This plugin seems to be the best at this point for getting things imported in anymore: (In modern Firefox that is, I personal keep an old Firefox portable around for large scale import/export work since it just works better, since I can use the much better #ImportTiddlersPlugin)

That is terrible news.

Do you know where I can get a Portable FireFox 16 (or so) as I have allowed mine to upgrade and Portableapps.com seems to only have very old versions available ?

At the Moment I cant even save my tiddlywiki, let alone install http://repository.tiddlyspace.com/TiddlyFileImportr

Arrgh - TiddlyWiki is my life and I cant have this happen now.

Portableapps.com has pretty much all the old versions you could ever want... you just don't find them on their "normal site". :D

Hi Tomy,

try TW 2.7.0. Problems with importing have nothing to do with TiddlyFox; in TW 2.7.0 they are intended to be fixed (check the thread [1], not sure if they are "totally" fixed, but core code definitely got some problems removed). But if you downgrade your FF, you'll probably need FF 14, because since FF 15, you can't add priveledges to new files (and downgrading will probably break old settings), but you can try FF 16 first.

As far as I know, in some version of TiddlyFox the prompt started to appear only once for each document.

Best regards,
Yakov.

Thanks for you Help Arc and Yacob,

Looking better but not perfect.

I manged to download 2.7.0 then import all the tiiddlers from my main tiddlywiki, auto save occurs, then import recent tiddlers (exported when I could not save my tiddly wiki) - I do this all before I reload the tiddlyWiki because once I do that I seemed to loose the import facility.

Once again I could not save my tiddly wiki after a period of use for no clear reason.

I have since discovered that the import tool fails to work when I attempt to select the import file using the "..." file dialogue. However If I paste the file name in, imports work. But once again I can't save the tiddlywiki.

I am using http://www.TiddlyTools.com/#ImportTiddlersPlugin 4.6.2

Any further suggestions or background appreciated.

Okay, so if I'm reading that right:
You are starting with a empty 2.7.0 and importing all your old tiddlers from a 2.6.6.
Than after you import your old tiddlers it losses the ability to save?

It sounds like something you are importing is causing systems issues.
You may try only importing your data and no plugins from your old wiki, and than adding plugins back one at a time until you run across the one that is causing saving to stop working.

If there's no real personal information in the Tw (Either the none working 2.6.6 or the exported bulk) I could look though it and see if I can find anything that could be causing issues if you wanted to upload it somewhere. (Dropbox, Gdrive...etc)

Arc,

I have now upgraded to 2.7.0 and running in portable FF14.0.1 - with TiddlyFox and will return to this set of problems later as I have lost so much time so far. I must say that all the in and outs with tiddlwiki save/import/export and backups (Less backups plugin not working) is eroding my confidence in tiddlyWiki, though so far it has not forced me to consider abandoning it, I have so much invested in it.

Hopefully those with the power to can try and stabalise these problems.

Thanks All.

Actually, I'd second Arc's suggestion about disabling all the plugins and testing. but if you don't want to spend more time, that's not an option.

Besides, for regular (auto)import, you can try SharedTiddlersPlugin [1], although import is not its prime target (rather including and autoimport).

Hi Tony,

I suggest you go back further, import and saving problems did not only start with Firefox 14+, try version 4 or perhaps 3.6.4.

It's not that those are from the eighties, it's just that Firefox undergoes some cray release cycles the outcome of which unfortunately hasn't been all too favourable for the TiddlyWiki community.

My 5cts, I really don't see how a user is not allowed to use a browser without restrictions. If I don't care about certain security concerns (and am allowed not to care by the admin of my machine), I prefer a browser that allows me to not care, especially in the context of local files that I can trust... because, well, I created them.

Cheers, Tobias.
