I have an aggravating problem that I have been unable to solve. I hope that someone can offer a solution or a work-around. The problem is: When I attempt to save a TiddlyWiki file on one of my laptops, I get the following error message:

[Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x8052000e (NS_ERROR_FILE_IS_LOCKED) [nsIFileOutputStream.init]"
nsresult: "0x8052000e (NS_ERROR_FILE_IS_LOCKED)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://tiddlyfox/content/overlay.js ::
TiddlyFox.saveFile :: line 98" data: no]

Here is a description of the computers involved, and more details regarding the problem:

  • This error occurs with both Tiddlywiki 5 and Tiddly Classic;
  • I am using the Firefox browser and saving with the TiddlyFox extension;
  • I use several Tiddlywiki files, which I access from several computers using Dropbox;
  • The problem shows up when I am trying to save the work on one of the laptops, and it interferes with my ability to save, rendering that computer unusable for TiddlyWiki;
  • This error does not occur on any other computer, and the difficulty does not seem to be reproducible on another computer.

What has been done to address the issue – to date

  • I have tried closing TiddlyWiki and reopening it;
  • I have tried rebooting the computer;
  • I have attempted to reload TiddlyFox, and I have the most recent version;
  • I have refreshed FireFox, and I have the most recent version of FireFox;
    • Refreshing FireFox corrected the problem for a while, but then the problem re-emerged;
  • I have tried removing all nonessential programs from the computer thinking that there could be another program interfering with TiddlyFox;.
    • This fixed the problem to the point that I believed the problem was corrected, but then the problem came back

Any ideas on how this can be fixed would be most welcome.

You say "I have tried removing all nonessential programs" - but does this includes having tried to remove (disable) all the FF plugins? A first thing might be to look if there are some specific plugins you use on that computer but not on the others and only disable those, before next step.

Maybe try starting up Firefox in safemode to disable all plugins and see how it behaves then? This also disables Tiddlyfox of course. Might give some clue.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I tried shutting down extensions and add-ons to FireFox.  This seemed to address the problem.  I'm not sure which add-on caused the problem, but I am suspicious of an add-on that snuck onto my computer from WildTangent.  I'm still waiting to make sure this fix takes.  As I mentioned, I believed that the problem was corrected earlier, and it was not.  But this fix looks really good.  Thanks again for the help.

Hi Mrvmeck

Sometimes that error message is associated with trying to save to a pathname that either contains spaces or international characters or is on a network share. It may be worth trying to move the TW HTML file to a different folder and try again.

Best wishes

Jeremy.

Well, I spoke to soon.  Shutting down the add-ons and FireFox extension fixed the problem for a while, much as getting rid of unneeded programs.  But now the problem has returned.  I am at a loss because I can't see what is triggering this problem.  I will try moving the files to a new directory.  If that does not work, I may try a work-around, such as the new extension offered on this site that saves out of the Chrome browser.

On a thread in this group I read once that renaming the file (changing the name of the tiddlywiki file) does the trick.
I do not know why that would work but it has usually worked for me (with TiddlyWiki Classic).
The error message might come back, especially after I've tweaked and changed a lot of tiddlers (worked with plug-ins and stylesheets), but then I rename the file again.
I also make sure I close any other open instances of TiddlyWiki (also read about that in this group) and even went so far as to reboot the computer at times.
But renaming has worked very reliably for me.
Best,
Johannes

Hi, I had the same issue so I created a new user account so that I could start with a fresh browser. (or try the guest account). Working great now.
