First - I was an early Tiddler guy from way back, have journeyed elsewhere (evernote, my own tools, ...) but now after a decade or more happy to see the community alive and well and found TW5 and started using it 2 days ago. - have been impressed with so much the same but so much is better. After using so many modern tools and coding my own - I can say that TiddlyWiki was made so well on day one that still outshines ( seeing several notes at once, clean DB of one file, able to easily extend cause you can program anything, community to share this programmability at speed). In one day ( yes long day) - I have Twiki up on my owncloud protected server that is shared  my win desktop, win laptop, Linux machine at lab, Android (and will try iOS soon) - using tiddlyDesktop pointed to that one twiki - so all local, all backed up  but all one file (owncloud) shared WOW!. Impressive - And strong videos/tutorials to get me back to advanced beginner so quick.

Found my old favorites tools

strong programmed  todo / completed system
full gcal calendar sidebar
own nested 'contents' as sidebar start for great org
tiddlers that grab all my grad students from tags  man so many more good filters)
cherrypicker plugin so in any note I can put in a statement  (todo or any info I want to list in a place) and then have lists built back in a main area where each item has link back to the more info in a full tiddler.
links to anything
links to local file / folders

All great - thanks community!!!!

Some quick questions -

so what I have not resolved yet ( QUESTIONS)

1) Local links to executables?

for local links - I can't execute a program with an exe  ( it just does nothing)

I can do this [[word|file://localhost\E:\jump\hellotest.docx]]  which will open ms word fine

but if I try this [[search|file://localhost\E:\jump\Search.exe]] it does not start the program

so my workaround is to call a .docx for word or .psd dummy for photoshop but some of my tools have no file  association

is there anyway to get a .exe or shortcut to one as a link in TW?

2) wikiword completion?

I used to have a plugin in classic TW that completed WikiWord for me or brought up a dropdown of current WikiWords or something as I started type ( like linux autocomplete). I like to type where people and things are the wiki words / tiddlers on the fly,  yet my memory is not great - so this autocomplete tool really helped
Is there any plugins /techniques you would suggest.

3) best resources for learning advanced tricks / scripts /plugins?

I noted many of the old pages ( classic wiki) of people that would show and explain the best of the best tricks for noting, organization, todo are gone or old (like the once great tiddlytools.com

what are  the best new sites for best organisation / script / plugin info to get me good and advanced  again

currently I have these linked to help me in my HowToTiddly notes ( but want more beyond the basics)

are there others you would recommend?

thanks again for never giving up - I can attest to leaving trying everything and coming back to such an elegant smart system / community

Welcome back steved.

cherrypicker plugin so in any note I can put in a statement  (todo or any info I want to list in a place) and then have lists built back in a main area

Flattering to hear this. I'm frankly surprised the idea hasn't caught on more (...and been properly coded).

1) Local links to executables?

Others more knowledgable can give a more elaborate answer but basically browser security restrictions block this.

so my workaround is to call a .docx for word or .psd dummy for photoshop

clever.

2) wikiword completion?

Please support this github request: Feature Request: Trigger Custom Popups via Custom Strings #3784
Meanwhile, there is a plugin called comptext or something along those lines by snowgoon. Do search. I used it more previously but a few glitches were frustrating so I eventually gave up on it.

3) best resources for learning advanced tricks / scripts /plugins?

Tobias Beer's site is IMO still one of the best. It is slowly getting outdated and I hope this super creative man will return to us.

You should add this to your link collection, since it will help you find everything else:

Steved,

Yes, welcome back. Whilst I never "left:" tiddlywiki myself, I did take a while to jump from classic to TW5 so I think I can empathise with your position. Here is a few quick responses we can discuss further;

1) Local links to executables?

 file:///E:\jump\hellotest.docx is the format that works for me, however only if the tiddlywiki is "displayed" by an application with full local access rights such as TiddlyDesktop, renaming a tiddlywiki to .hta on windows machines will also have local access however IE intervines to ask run or download.

TiddlyDesktop
  • Even this to a shortcut file works [[file://C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Excel.lnk]] which is a way to launch things with some parameters.
  • This works to locate the program that supports this extension [[file://C:\Users\antho\Documents\Une famille ouverte.docx]]
  • Personally I have associated .tw files with FireFox which are simply renamed tiddlywiki.html files. I find Timimi in FireFox one of the best ways of using and saving local tiddlywikis.
I will be responding to this thread later today on links https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=en#!topic/tiddlywiki/qzzGJXnm7DE

2) wikiword completion?

I am sure you will find some additional tools but perhaps one already under your nose is in the Edit View, Editor Tool bar, the link icon allows you to search for tiddler titles and insert a link to them while editing.
You could build some custom ones as well to say insert only project names.

3) best resources for learning advanced tricks / scripts /plugins?

As mark S says TiddlyWiki Toolmap: is a good index and within that are a number of links to good learner starter wikis.

Mohamads Shiraz Plugin can help you explore.

Do not underestimate the amount of information on TiddlyWiki.com

By the way, I have developed a copy of the current TiddlyWiki.com you can download and use to annotate and keep track of your learning journey.

 A New version of this soon will be even better. For Example goto http://tiddlywiki.psat.com.au/, then at the bottom of home and select Show Intensedebate comments.
These comments are external to the TiddlyWiki and the examples there came from me using an offline copy and a guest post.
So it will be possible to continue discussion even from an offline personal copy which you own private annotations.

Regards
Tony

Thanks all,

Funny when someone called me steved, I realized yea that was me, so I did a steved search here and I have about a dozen messages on this very board from 2006 to 2010, and I must be a simple guy because some were quite similar to current requests.

again thanks all.

Thanks, Tony was right about the .lnk to get exe to run. Because I want local programs to run on different computers ( maybe different paths) anf some of the short cuts have spaces which are hard to parse, My trick was to take the startup shortcuts (or make my own) and move them to D:/Jump which exists on all my windows computer at least - and I can change the names so that no spaces are in the shortcuts - and all works great - so now my opening tiddler has my most frequent used web links, local programs and local folders /  files - nice and clean and my fast way to get  / do anything (these would be live links in my tiddler:

TOP

web: gmail || drive || fb || gnews || mail || keep

local run: DesktopSearch || Photoshop || Word || AnyDesk

local go: D-top|| D-deepdream || E-drive

where I got the local run by this code:

local run:  [[DesktopSearch|file://D:\jump\CopernicDesktopSearch.lnk]] || [[Photoshop|file://D:\jump\Photoshop.lnk]] || [[Word|file://D:\jump\Word.lnk]] || [[AnyDesk|file://D:\jump\AnyDesk.lnk]]

all works well and can be modified based on my usual / needs.

thanks
