I have an outline which needs to become table of content

I know how to use tags to create table of content - each level of  table of content receiving its previous level tiddler name as a tag.

But this is highly laborious and I know the TW folk like efficiency.

Can anyone suggest the most efficient way to make this outline into a Table of content.

Many thanks

Here is the outline:

The first ground, Very Joyful, has two parts:

  1. Introduction to the first ground
    1. How the first ground is attained
    2. Definition of the first ground
    3. Divisions of the first ground
      1. The path of seeing
        1. The exalted awareness of meditative equipoise of the path of seeing
        2. The exalted awareness of subsequent attainment of the path of seeing
        3. The exalted awareness of the path of seeing that is neither of the two
          1.  The uninterrupted path of the path of seeing
          2.  The released path of the first ground
          3. The exalted awareness of meditative equipoise of the path of seeing that is neither of the two
      2. The path of meditation of the first ground
    4.  Etymology of the first ground
  2.  Explanation of the first ground
    1. Briefly showing the entity of the ground, the basis of characteristics
    2. An extensive explanation of the good qualities that characterize the ground
      1. The good qualities that beautify one’s own continuum
        1.  Enumerating the good qualities
          1. The good quality of attaining a meaningful name
          2. The good quality of birth into Buddha’s family
          3.  The good quality of abandoning the three bonds
          4.  The good quality of abiding in great joy
          5.  The good quality of being able to cause a hundred worlds to shake
          6. The good quality of mastering higher grounds
          7. The good quality of destroying the causes of lower rebirth
          8. The good quality of exhausting the grounds of ordinary beings
        2. Showing the good qualities in brief
      2. The good qualities that outshine others’ continuum
        1.  Outshining Hearers and Solitary Realizers by way of lineage on this ground
        2.  Outshining Hearers and Solitary Realizers by way of wisdom on the seventh ground
        3.  An explanation of the meaning established by this teaching
          1. The teaching of Sutra on the Ten Grounds that Hearers and Solitary Realizers have the realization of the lack of inherent existence of all phenomena
          2. The sources that prove this
          3. Rejecting arguments against this teaching
      3. The surpassing good quality of the first ground

    3. Conclusion by way of expressing the good qualities of the ground

Kelsang,

It is not clear to be where you are at this point in time but if this is a fresh start

New Tiddler and call it "The first ground, Very Joyful"
Tag it with TableOfContents
Now use the new Here Button twice to create (note no numbers)

    • Introduction to the first ground
    • Explanation of the first ground
    • Conclusion by way of expressing the good qualities of the ground

      Now Open
      • Introduction to the first ground
and Use new Here to create

        • How the first ground is attained
        • Definition of the first ground
        • Divisions of the first ground
        • Etymology of the first ground
Then continue adding tiddlers with new here under the relevant tiddler.

Including the numbers in the title is a quick way to sort but other ways to sort tiddlers may help you insert or delete items in the future. Personally I would leave them out.

If you want you can place in each tiddler with subtiddlers or build it into the viewtemplate

          {{||$:/core/ui/TagTemplate}}

This will show a tiddler tag pill based on the current tiddler, so clicking on it not only let you see and open the tiddlers tagged with the current one, but allows you to drag and drop them to reorder them. Installing the Open all by Tag http://t5a.tiddlyspot.com/#Open%20All%20By%20Tag will also allow you to open all tiddlers one level below in one click.

If you want you can make a tiddler display the list with numbers later if necessary.

          Regards
          Tony

I'm interested in an efficient way to show the lists with numbers. Are there tips on how to do that?

          Mervin,

I am sure its being done before and can be done. Let us see if someone responds.

Adding numbers to a field in each tiddler, then display it with the tiddler in the TOC macro could work but it would be very manual.

Building in dynamically allocated numbers during the list process would tolerate additions and deletions, however if you use the value of the number as a reference, because the numbers can change what they refer to.

You could have a list independent from the TOC that formats it with # to get basic numbers

Evans Formula Plugin also may have a lot to offer.

          Regards
          Tony

          Kelsang,

          You may also like

Which can also the same TOC solution I mentioned.

In time I will be releasing enhanced versions of this Outliner.

          Regards
          Tony
