Hi Again

Returning to an old issue. Using UploadPlugin and UploadTiddlerPlugin
(both from BidiXTW) from within recent Firefox versions. I previously
reported that as of FF5 this plugin has some problems. Testing it
again I find -

UploadTiddlerFromFile - (uploading from local file) does not
work....in FF8 or Opera11

UploadTiddler ...(uploading from http file) works for FF and Opera...
BUT... in FF gives the message that I have to save the file
first...ignoring that message allows FF to finish the upload..... but
its rather annoying having to cancel a warning message everytime. On
the other hand Opera does not give that annoying message and makes the
upload without any hiccups.

So...... how can I get rid of that FF warning message????

AND....is there any possibility that UploadTiddlerFromFile will ever
make a come back (work again) - I really loved that one!!!!

Thanks in Advance
Skye

Hi Skye

I use FF portable v. 4.01 if I need to upload a TW to the net.:

Here's a customized version (added TiddlySnip and a local TW):http://
xn--mns-ula.dk/TW/#Download%20FF4TWPortable

I wonder if someone is capable of creating a xul-application -
compatible with FF ver. 4.01...
That could become a veritable TW-controlcenter for local TWs...

Thanks Mans...
I used that strategy for a while..... only now I am wanting to have
students also be able to upload from their own coomputers...so I cant
realyy ask them all to go back to FF4..... and its a bit strange to
instist that they use an older version of FF from a USSBstick... if
they have a newer FF installed...... makes us/me look a bit outdated.

To now I have been using Dropbox to get around this with
students...... but some find even that daunting.... as the Dropbox
installation only works in english...and my people or often portugues-
only people.

As I said I loved UploadTiddlerfromFile.... guess I was hoping it
could be resurrected.

Thanks anyway
Skye

Hi Skye

Change the skin then, - make it look more Sky'ish :-)
If you try out my ver. of FF portable (4.01) you'll discover that it
opens a local TW (from a folder in the portable FF directory) - this
could be any TW you provide
(you configure what local file to set as homepage in the
FirefoxPortable.ini txt file )
-- the one I've added is setup to collect TiddlySnips via the FF
extension. (Which is also preinstalled)

Yesterday I was playing with the Webian- Shell project http://webian.org/shell/
- it's based on Gecko 2 and is very basic when it comes to normal
browser features (no autosuggest, no history etc..)
What it does provide is an different looking browser, which opens up
as if it was a desktop-environment, effectively taking over your
desktop in full screen mode....
Everything seems tweakable - and the Chromeless-project which Webian
is based on, strives for tweakability via webtools like: js, css and
html files - so it should be pretty easy to create your own Chromeless
- browser taylored for TiddlyWiki - maybe even featuring a customized/
inbuilt TiddlyWiki to control the behaviour and look of the
browserapplication...

Hi All (and Mans)

Yeah...thats a good option...... I am thinking that students with less
secure internet connection could use the usb approach.....while those
with more secure computer/internet connection can access/use the
system directly from my server (uploadplugin works online from same
domain!).

However I cant open the links to your FFportable system....are they
working for you...

I also played with webian a while back...seems like great
potential...but still in the early days...but looks good...

Thanks
Skye

Hi Måns,

Right click "save target as" works but the zip file is not usable. It
looks like the file isn't on the server

Now I've changed some permissions and the links are now relative...
It seems to work now - even if you left click on the links..

Please tell if a new download still seems to be corrupt...

OK.....things looking good.... downloaded the windows version and its
working fine...thanks Mans.

Actually you have re-newed my interest in portable apps and usb
formats. Portable Firefox.... combined with files stored in a portable
Dropbox (on the same drive), add in LaunchApplicationPlugin (to
remember Dropbox to synchronise - portable Dropbox is not active all
the time!), a good notetaking TW, maybe a GTD TW.....and maybe even
access to a remote MySQL at times.....and you got yourself a pretty
good Learnng Management System!!!!!

That sounds COOL Skye - please share, if you setup a complete LMS with
TW on an USB..

BTW: You could create your own FF theme on http://www.getpersonas.com/
with a nice header - use the same header in a "MasterTW" which is used
as a local startpage, install "hide caption titlebar", "autohide
tabbar" and "autohide bookmarks" - and you'll have a unique browser +
TW setup for your portable TW-LMS :-)

Hi FrD

I'm afraid the Linux part isn't setup thoroughly yet [1]
"The Linux version (in the same zip file) might be able to use the
windows profile - if someone knows how to edit the provided firefox.sh
file to point in the right direction - otherwise the windows version
can run via Wine in linux.... "
I found the portable linux Firefox app here http://portablelinuxapps.com
(click the internet applications icon)
If you want to try to make a "truly portable" version of FF v. 4, for
linux you'll have to install/extract the contents of a tar.gz
You can get the different versions here: ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/
Bauwe Bijl explains how to have several installed versions of FF [2]
[3]
Make Firefox Portable between Windows and Linux (without Wine) as
explained on portableapps.com [4] (Shared profiles...)
