We recently integrated tiddlywiki with a GUI framework that we
developed. On top of tiddlywiki, we add a fully integrated WYSWYG
graphical html editor, store notes in an encrypted/password protected
local database, allow easy attachment of files/folders, and support
quick publishing of notes. A video demo of this program can be found
at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i16Vt6mhNco.

The program is free and can be downloaded from http://www.smartgoldfish.com/download.html.
We have used it internally for quite some time now and it is currently
under its first public stable release. Please join our forum at
http://forum.smartgoldfish.com/ and we like to get your suggestions
and feedbacks.

Happy Holidays

Hi John

This looks great. I'd really like to try it out, however I'm on linux
(with Wine) and I can't run this exe file...
Do you have any plans for a Linux version?
Thanks for sharing!

Hi Måns:
We have tested KNote on Linux (Ubuntu 10.04) under Wine using the
zipped version of the download (non installer). Start KNote by
running KNoteStart.exe. If you run into any problems, please leave us
a note on our forum. As an alternative to Wine, KNote works well in VM
(virtualbox/vmware). Native ports for Linux and MAC are under way.

I'm using Puppy Linux 5.1.1 (Lucid) - Wine version is 1.1.43 (newest
stable version is 1.2.2 I know...) Doesn't work here..

> As an alternative to Wine, KNote works well in VM (virtualbox/vmware).

With Windows you mean?? It still needs a host environment I guess...

>Native ports for Linux and MAC are under way.

Great - I'm looking forward to it!!

Would you consider creating a native TiddlyWiki plugin which could
load the tinymc interface in a tiddler and exploit the local linking
features??
That would be awesome - and open up for use in DropBox, showing a
TiddlyWiki with working relative links... :-)

I understand the awesomeness of having an encrypted KNetFramework -
however I miss the layout- and pluginfeatures of TiddlyWiki.

Thanks again :-)

Awesomeness:
1. Such an easy way to drag and drop images and documents is awesome!
I would love to have that on NoteStorm!
2. What a beautiful text editor! I would love to have that on
NoteStorm too!
3. Not dependent on a browser! A big plus in my book.
4. Nice look to the program over all
5. Haven't tried the publish to blog button, but that looks like it
could be a cool feature.
6. Insert and edit tables! Sweet!
7. Toggle full screen mode!

Some weaknesses that might keep me from replacing my current TWs with
KNote:
1. Every time I open it, I have to get permission, twice, from my
computer to run it
2. Every time I open it, the browser opens to smartgoldfish.com. That
should only happen the first time, not every time.
3. I deleted the background image, and it is easier on my eyes now.
Might want a less busy background, like a gradient.
4. Doesn't look like I can create a note file to send to a friend, say
with the photos I drag and drop.
5. Can't find the stylesheet to make style tweaks and add css classes
I tend to use, such as Greek, but maybe that is in the user manual I
can't get Chrome to download.
6. No tabs, treeview or sliders for the mainmenu.
7. I'm not clear if this is limited to creating one file, or can you
make mutliple KNote files?

Don't let my list of weaknesses fool you. I really like this. Way to
go.

A question regarding the KNetFramework..

Would it be possible to make it load/en-or decrypt a "normal"
TiddlyWiki?

It looks and feels like a great piece of software.
#Runs independent of a browser
#Has a full blows wysiwyg editor
#Drag drop capabilities for attachments. The attachments are stored in
a separate 'Data' folder.
#Encrypted
What I feel missing is:
#No advanced menu system, like a tree view.
#No way to delete multiple tiddlers.
#No complex search. The search opens all the matched tiddlers. This
would be undesirable if there is a large number of matched tiddlers.
#No way of extricating various notes out of the program, like a local
export or something.

Really great - a kind of advanced version of the prism standalone
application running TW. When will we be able to export our own TWs to
this GUI framework?

Thanks all for the feedbacks.
In terms of search, KNote has a very advanced search function that
works like google search. You can search for multiple terms and KNote
will automatically sort and present the search results based on the
likelihood of match. We find that we rarely need to scroll down to
find what we are searching for.

Thanks

Hi Mans:
Many of the UIs and functions are tied to our framework. At this
point, it will be close to impossible to create such an plugin that
could work with existing browsers.
Dropbox is a great way to sync your KNote. Simply put the Data folder
(in KNote folder) into your dropbox folder.

Hi Mans:
It is definitely possible the other way around. However, this plugin
will be different from typical tiddlywiki plugins since it will
involve more than just javascript code.

It would be great to have a encrypted environment, no dependency on a
specific browser (or OS btw... :-))
where you could store and work with your normal TiddlyWiki.

Do you have it in the pipeline?? -

KNotes adds a number of missing formatting and editing features to a
simplified tiddlywiki template. Plus encryption (but for note taking
that is not really that important in most cases)

But
* You only can have one database (equal to only being allowed to have
one Tiddlywiki on your computer)
* Navigation support for organizing and browsing your notes is very
limited. Advanced Search is offered as a solution, but then you need
to know exactly what you are looking for, and that is usually not the
case
* The publish mode is very limited. It only publishes individual
notes and no way to manage or navigate you collection of published
notes, other than if you happened to link them forward and backwards.
Published notes can not be associated easily with your ownership.
There is no Search function. There is no encryption of published
notes. Tags only bring you to an empty page.

So
I really hope the KNote team continues work on KNotes, leveraging this
forums reviews and suggestions to get it right, focusing on more
navigation support to start, and the ability to maintain multiple
separate KNote collections. I think they should forget the Publish
mode as anything important right now, leaving that for later (although
it may be part of their revenue model, give the ads included next to
your publications)

Sorry about the delay in replying you guys.
With KNote, people can create as many databases as they want. This and
some related questions have been answered in http://forum.smartgoldfish.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=6

The publish concept of KNote is quiet new and apparently our
documentation is not good enough to address the misconceptions. I am
thinking about creating some examples. Will keep you guys updated.

In terms of organizing, we feel it is sufficient given the advance
search and the ability to customize the main menu with links and links
to tags (just copy and paste). One of the design goals of KNote is
ease of use. We had to make some trade-offs along the way. A tree like
menu system will be nice for advanced users and we will keep that in
mind.

Again, thanks all for the feedback.

Hi John

Thanks all for the feedback. We just released a new version of KNote
with many improvement, including a tree view.

Thanks :-) It looks very nice - and now I found out how to install it on Puppy Linux with Wine:
One little problem: I renamed the Getting Started article - and also the link in the Organizer - Now it starts up with a non existing Getting Started article... How do I fix that?

Hi John,

really cool stuff - I like most the drag'n'drop - as you can see in
the reactions of this thread probably one favorite of the TW
community ;-)

What I do not understand is the consequences of your integration with
your framework:

> ... integrated tiddlywiki with a GUI framework...

Does this mean,
(a) you integrated a plain vanilla TW, but the result (KNote) has no
plugin feature anymore? or
(b) .. Knote *do* have also the capability to be augmented b the
several plugins found in the TW world (example Eric ones)?

Cheers Michael

fix this if it has been deleted.

Request:
I'd like to be able to choose another title to be displayed at startup..
Question:
What exactly is the "import function" supposed to import from a TiddlyWiki?
I tried it with different local TWs on my system and it shows a dialog with: "Noting to import" at every attempt to import from a TW??
Upgrading
It seems to download a new version, however it gives me an error when restarting - telling me that it couldn't move/copy the upgrade to the correct location. Maybe this is a Wine related problem - don't know..

Hi Måns:
The import feature seems to be working fine for me. I just tried this
by downloading a fresh tiddlywiki and add a few new tiddlers? Could
you try that? Please leave a note on our forum if it does not work.
The upgrade feature could be wine related and we will look into that.
In the mean time, you could just manually download a new copy and move
over the existing data folder. Thanks for the feedback.

Take a look at Eric Shulman's web site -- his plugins are arguably the
most popular.

http://www.tiddlytools.com/

Every decade or so I take some time to survey various information
manager programs. One aspect not often considered in reviews is that
of continuity. The key to continuity, in turn, is the business model
of the product. Pure open source projects, especially single-developer
projects, seem to falter after awhile. The web is littered with the
remains of once-popular information managers whose developers lost
interest.

On the flip side, some products with a traditional sale/lease model
survive, but price themselves out of widespread acceptance. This is
especially true since the entire category lacks the recognition and
standardization of familiar software such as spreadsheets and word-
processors.

So...that said...what's the perceived business model of KNote? Is the
game plan to develop it into a fully commercial product? Or to use it
as a tool for custom solutions? Or?

Hi,

Why nobody asks about Knote so much time?
It's still an amazing application with unique features and high speed in processing large data.
It's forum is inactive, development maybe dead, I begun to love this application better than any other software.
