Hi Guys,

I'm Akhil. I work as a java developer and have a few blogs (main: http:\\akhilspassion.blogspot.com). I love programming and am now learning more about Google app engine, wikis etc. tiddlywiki is the only one I found the best after reviewing so many other wikis out there. It has incredible potentials. I've interest to contribute to this project as well. Pls provide me with some places to get started as a contributor. I could use my spare time to help build this.

Good to have you aboard, and thank you for your enthusiasm.

There are many ways to contribute to projects like TiddlyWiki, according to your skills and interests. I'd encourage you to spend time in the discussions here on the group because its a useful way of learning what other people are trying to do with the software. Answering newbie questions is a great way to get started.

Beyond that, there are quite a few areas you could contribute:

- bug fixing: we use github for the TiddlyWiki code and track outstanding bugs there

- documentation: we have a user documentation site at http://tiddlywiki.org/ that is open to all to contribute

- tiddlywiki5: the new version of TiddlyWiki is now under development at http://five.tiddlywiki.com/

Getting started with contributing to a project can be tricky as it is hard to know what's needed, hence my starting suggestion: get involved in conversations and discussions. Don't be afraid to kick off new topics.

Tiddlywiki world does not have a set and laid out path for progression path. I'd say the best way for a beginner is to work is from outside to inside. That is, start tinkering with the outside things, understand the system tiddlers and how tinkering with them leads to interface and functional change. Learn how javascript can be leveraged. Tiddlytools website is an avalanche (yes I would call it an avalanche) of plugins which can be read to understand what are the internal objects and functions of a TW and how they can be manipulated. Besides this understanding the GTD adaptations created by simon baird and tobias can also serve as useful tools for learning which will lead to understanding of tiddlywiki internals.
I guess in programming world, as you may know already, looking at and cheating from other people's code is a common way of progress.

If you like Google App Engine, you might be interested in my flavour of TiddlyWiki, which is a branch from TW 2.4.1 with an app engine backend written in Python. I started before Java was an option and I have often wished the server-side was Java.

 

It's called giewiki and the source code is at http://code.google.com/p/giewiki while the homepage is http://giewiki.appspot.com -and as it says, I still welcome if anyone would take a stab at translating the 4000 lines of python into Java. Most recently, I've been working to implement the new full-text search feature of GAE, which is essential to the content volume scaleability of giewiki. I've yet to test it with significant volumes of content, but presumably Google knows how to do these things. They weren't in any hurry to bring it out.
