Hey guys
I know this has been discussed before many times, I've read about it here in the forums, and I know this horse has already been beaten to death several times and no acceptable closure came from it, but I was feeling  inspired so I decided to give it a shot.

You know how tiddlywiki is comprised of small very simple bits of text called tiddlers that once together linked in specific ways with little more than the text itself turn into a powerful whole that is TiddlyWiki?
This is similar to how you can take notes in a single sheet of paper, but if you grab that paper and fold it around in specific ways you can get very beautiful and complex Origami structures with nothing more than the paper itself.
I was feeling bored, and having a slow day at work, so inspired by Origami I made these example logos just for fun. Maybe Jeremy likes them, maybe this works as a catalyst to help figure out what he want's, or perhaps it inspires some other members with more skills than me to make something better ;)

Anyway here they are, made in Inkscape, so they would be availabe as plain SVGs that could be embedded in TiddlyWiki without much size penalty.

Hi Duarte,

Looks really nice. My favourites are the "mono" ones (especially TWLogo_2048_MonoBlue).

Hey Felix, thanks for the coment.
The mono versions were more as an alternate representation of the same logo, for contexts where full color representation is undesirable or impractical, but glad you like it. They sure could stand as the main logo by themselves :)
And I think they can actually get pretty good readability even at lower resolutions like 16x16 pixels, suitable icons or for a favicon, check it out:

Hi Duarte,

I think the origami inspired idea is really good...weaving might be another one.

Hi Duarte

Terrific work, I do like them a lot, particularly the monochrome one on a red background. I'm curious whether you'd be interested in expanding the scope of your sketch to show the entire front page. I appreciate it's a lot more work, but I'd be very interested to see how you'd approach the totality of the visual language of TiddlyWiki.

Best wishes

Jeremy.

Excellent efforts.

I like the concept of origami.
It would be interesting to see what a real life origami specialist might come up with.

Thanks for the comments guys, very glad you like my concepts.

Hey Jeremy, I'm really happy that you liked the idea, and glad that you appreciate the work. Some some times the best concepts just naturally spurt out, and this one had been laying in the back of my head brewing for few days now.
Sure, I'd love to do some more work in it, if you feel this is going anywhere in the right direction, perhaps "clean up" the design a bit, and maybe introduce it in a tiddlywiki itself and see how it goes along with the design.

Perhaps work on the default palette a bit to make a little matching work? I've seen a pretty strong inclination towards the monochrome versions so I'll probably start there.

I think I may be having another TiddlyWiki induced "slow day" at work again :)

The origami-like is great as it refers to "return - cross-reference"... May be the "t" letter could be better replaced by a thin curve crossing the horizontal bar of the "t", kept, (which would be part of the "w") ?
Generally speaking, I enjoy flat designs with basic or no colours (black, white, grey) : they appear stronger... and can be employed in tiny icons.
Anyway, I find the idea & the results proposed very good !

Thanks to all for the positive feedback. :)

Ok I've reworked the logo a bit; I'm a bit obsessive-compulsive about measurements and dimensions, so now all vertexes perfectly pixel-aling, both for the simplified 16x16 pixels icon version and more detailed large version. This allows for non blurred edges and crisper look and perfectly aligned metrics both with and without text that all scales up well for all versions.

Since Jeremy (and most others) liked the mono version better I focused on that one and made two variants the "Chubby" ones with a slight stroke around them and softer round edges; and the original one, slimmer and with larger gaps and sharper edges. Let me know which one you like the most, Jeremy (make sure you zoom in, it's a subtle difference)
Now I am thinking that if any logos were to eventually ship with tiddlywiki, It'd be cool if the took on the current theme colors (like the toolbar icons already do). I've been investigating but it is beyond by basic CSS skills, so I present them here in two color schemes (pinkish and a shade of blue matching the default theme title color) which I hope will be unnecessary in the final version.

I'm out of time right now but I plan to work on this later tonight if time permits and present an innitial mockup of this included inside a tiddlywiki.

Let me know what you think

Graphics man Duarte strikes again! Great work! ;-)

In fiddling with some stuff I found this site that lists various way to format text using CSS into quite amazing things. I find the thought of using code, rather than an image, to produce a logo. I'm guessing it would save some kb's too. With the right knowledge I would think your drafts could be reproduced.

Thougths?

Blue with text is my preference. I could also see these in a muted form as the background for TiddlyWiki.

Very interesting, those effects are all pretty cool, amazing what CS can do. They are way beyond my skill level though. I only knew about CSS shapes, which are basically almost the same as SVG.
Mine would be SVGs, so technically there would be any binary image data embedded, though these CSS tricks could be a mighty alternative.

I also prefer the blue with text. The red versions are too much for my old, partially color-blind eyes.

Ok, my basic CSS skills allowed me to do this simple mockup.
I would imagine that if an official logo was ever chosen and included in the default tiddliwiki, ideally it's colors would be inherited from the current theme's palette, perhaps even from a dedicated color setting.
I tweaked the CSS to line up the top of the logo with the top edge of the first story tiddler, alternatively the logo could be sized around 28x28px and be placed in front of the site title text, for a less intrusive presentation.

Did I understand your request correctly, is this what you were expecting, Jeremy, or perhaps work more towards the existing page icons and layout?

A few fixes and missing things, apparently my styles tiddler somehow vanished, must have deleted it by accident.
Let me know if this is what you expected or if you wanted a full mockup of a TiddlyWiki frontpage with more profound changes towards webdesing/graphic design aspect of it.

Oops, 2MB just for a logo demonstration... Next time please use an empty version with hour additions. Apart from that I have to say that I love the logo, but I was expecting a more deep change. I think that having the TW background all blue and logo background transparent it will look much nicer.

evoking the very nerdy Godel Esher Bach... the idea of strange loops and self generating systems: TW is a quine, its self generating - we should make more of this.... even if its at the level of the muse: all "information" is self generating -- right? TW comes with its own philosophical puzzle to act as a muse for any "knowledge" producing activity

Thanks for the positive feedback everyone, glad to see my work appreciated. :)

@AlexHough
A moebius strip combined with the origami languange could definitely give something interesting too. hummm... :-L

@ Danielo Rodríguez
Sorry for the filesize, hope it didn't break your bandwidth, but I am sure Google servers can handle it. ;)
Jeremy had asked for a more global view and I wanted to preserve as much of the original content as possible to keep all in context.

About the deeper change, I was a bit shy in making deeper changes, most developers aren't very fond of redical changes to their beloved sofwares and UI, but I'm beginning to think that Jeremy wanted a full design mockup of a TiddlyWiki frontpage.
I am a bit busy at the moment, but as usual, the busiest moments are the one that get you head rushing with new ideais you have no time to materialize, so, as time permits, I'll try to work on a more complete mockup of a tiddlywiki with what I hope is a coherent language with the logo and Origami theme.

Give me some time and I'll post it as soon as I get a break.

Again thank you all for the feedback

Hi Duarte

About the deeper change, I was a bit shy in making deeper changes, most developers aren't very fond of redical changes to their beloved sofwares and UI, but I'm beginning to think that Jeremy wanted a full design mockup of a TiddlyWiki frontpage.

That is what I was thinking. Your existing mockup shows why: inserting the logo into the existing design doesn't seem to be fully satisfying.

I appreciate that it is a lot to ask, but we haven't had the pleasure of such a talented designer in the community before. It's the first time that we've had access to the talents of a graphic designer who also knows and understands TiddlyWiki. So, it's exciting for me.

One option you could explore would be to take the existing Vanilla/Snow White and see if you can bend it into something better. Or, if you preferred, you could think in terms of a completely new theme.

Great, thank you, I'll be looking forward to it.

Haha thanks I am flattered, although I must say I am not exactly a designer, I have no formal education in that area.
I am an actually an architect, which happens to have a few basic notions and enjoys graphic design a lot. I do what best I can moslty as a hobby or for the pleasure of it.

But it's true, it does feel a bit crude, I'll try to work on a more complete design solution for the whole visuals, I have a few ideas brewing already, which would hopefully not require too deep changes beyond some CSS/Ui stuff.
I'll have to stick to SVG and imagery to illustrate it though, my HTML and CSS skills are very basic at best, so any real attempts there would always be very limited my by lacking skills.

Your excitement is leaving me excited about this too. I'll try to rush my current work see if I can squeeze out a mockup during the weekend.
