Hi everyone,

could someone explain to me how my profile could become associated
with such spam??

Eric has mailed me:

> For the past three days, a spam posting has appeared in the TiddlyWiki
> group, with your return email address. It seems that someone may be
> posting spam to the by spoofing your email address... or, perhaps your
> system is infected?

Though I wrote back asking how I could prevent such in the future,
Eric sadly hasn't responded so far.

I can't see anything indicating that my Gmail account would have been
hacked.

Any advise would be highly appreciated.

Regards..

However, since if been locked out from TiddlyWiki GG I received 2
noreply mails by Gmail - on 25. and 28. of October - which say:

Spammers are getting smarter, presumably exploiting Google Groups
authentication mechanism.
So your e-mail account has not been compromised; they are just
pretending that their messages originate from your address.

This might be of interest:

(The amount of spam on this group is still manageable for us moderators,
and the occasional one slipping through isn't a disaster.)

wow. I hope this solves quickly and on the plus side provides an
insight into how these spammers works, leaving us a bit more empowered
if possible.

Thanks for the link:

QUOTE
The final straw was placed upon my patience with the Google Groups
system a few weeks ago. Spammers are now spoofing the email addresses
of existing group participants to sneak their messages through.
Previously you would've seen a delightful "FREE MOVIE DOWNLOADS" spam
from "freemo...@gmail.com" - but now you'll see it coming from
existing group users - or even the group moderators themselves. This
cheat completely bypasses the moderation system since the spammers are
pretending to be pre-moderated users.
The Google Groups system is completely fooled. The spam message comes
in claiming to be from an existing group participant - and according
to the Google Groups interface there is no difference. If you click
the user's name you'll be taken to a full listing of that user's posts
(with the spam messages delightfully interspersed)...
At this very moment my own email address, and the email addresses of
most of the jQuery group moderators, are being spoofed by spammers.
This means that we (the owner and moderators of the group) have to
moderate our own messages before we post, for fear of letting a
spoofed spam through. This will likely happen indefinitely since
Google Groups has been notoriously slow to fix problems with the site.

So there seems really no way to avoid this in the future?

Though this spoofing spamers seem to choose particularly the addresses
of trustworthy members, even of the moderators themself.. If this
repeats itself maybe the only way to avoid would be to sign up every
few months with a new gmail address?

ooops, my previous email was a blank one and didn't include my post.
Sorry for that.

I just wanted to add that on the French speaking TiddlyWiki group
(TiddlyWikiFR) we do moderate members that have recently joined the
group. This saved us from quite some spam messages.

Thanks for providing John Resig's blog link.
There are some obfuscation tricks to protect the moderators' address
from being spoofed though.
