Yes! It should be defined publicly!

Agreed Josiah

I think we could also find a method where double clicking a tid file allowed it to be opened in a default tiddlywiki

A .tw file extension used on single file tiddlywikis containing valid html code to open in a browser, or TiddlyWiki aware application.

But as posted elsewhere by me I would like to see .tw files also defined and supported so that they may be separated from html files if desired.

I have some additional arguments in favour of this that really belong in the Quinoid discussion where this was raised.

In this case only the app that opens the file needs to know about tw files. Quinoid can permit you to open any or all file types, it just needs to know how to handle the contents

Firefox already recognises an alternate ext because its mime type text/html is specified inside it, timimi recognises tw files as tw5 and provides the saving mechanism. So I chose to associate .tw files with Firefox. I dont presently have any other app for tw files. Now I just click a tw file anywhere, they have cat icons, and firefox opens them even if its not the default browser.

However if you install an app that handles the same file extension most  operating systems will choose one of two or more apps to be the default (usualy the last installed) and provide the method to choose from more than one app on the current desktop. This is "open with" on windows. This contention for what extension opens what app only occurs localy if the user installs 2 or more apps and they get to set the default.

Most lists of file extensions and their associated apps come from what is found in the wild, not by design. I remember how the old word perfect of days gone by did not care what or if an extension was used in the days of xxxxxxxx.ext short filenames. Users usually made a mess of files.

Having an extension for your app is a courteously to users because they can tell you apps files apart from others.

Tony

I too was thunking along those lines -- short and concise and not too technical-- all depends on the dictonary/place you're defining it at
