Greetings-

I love the simplicity of TiddlyWiki and I would like to use it as the
gateway for all my files and research.

As I expect that I will be gathering a rather large file with many
Tiddlers I would like some advice on how to proceed.

Questions:
Is there a maximum reasonable size for a TiddlyWiki?

Is it best to create several related or included files?

If I create several separate files is it possible to have them display
with different colors in the Primary File?

What kind of issues do I need to take into consideration that I might
not yet be aware of?

-- Don't want to discover later that I should have done things
differently, as data entry and references become extensive and
difficult to export and rebuild.

Thanks for all your support.

Good idea , If it were only a gateway - a logical organising tool I think plenty of room.

Very dependent on content, type. I have thousands of tiddlers and use 7MB + which is more than 7,000,000 characters

Is it best to create several related or included files?
If there is a logical way to do so, taking consideration of import, export, temporary, attach, external tiddlers, I recommend related files for large quantity or volume items you can always export older items, or use an annual tiddlywiki etc....
If I create several separate files is it possible to have them (the tiddlers from) display

with different colors in the Primary File?
Good Question, possibly

What kind of issues do I need to take into consideration that I might
not yet be aware of?
There are good tips for large files and performance available, and things like less backup plugins make a big difference
I think the issue is knowing your data and it's relationships and what you really need to do, perhaps your research falls into clear area and catagories that need not be together.

A good guestimate of your content size and number would be a halpfull guide here,
Also, if there ever was a tool to "lift a data model up by it's boot straps, tiddlywiki is it. Export and rebuild is not a problem if you are smart with your tags and data.

If you have not found an easy way to do it with TiddlyWiki, you have missed something.

> Is there a maximum reasonable size for a TiddlyWiki?

This depends very much on your usage:
http://tiddlywiki.org/wiki/Performance_Issues

Currently, the biggest TiddlyWiki* I'm aware of weighs in at 16 MB:
http://groups.google.com/group/tiddlywiki/t/bc12eb3a574ab230

> Is it best to create several related or included files?

I'm afraid it's hard to give a general answer to that.
You might even consider using something like TiddlyWeb, as that allows
combining individual tiddlers in very dynamic ways.

This is something we're doing with TiddlySpace (tiddlyspace.com), which
is a hosted service based on TiddlyWeb (since it's entirely open
source, so you also could set up your own tiddlyspace instance).

Can you provide some simple examples and outline of what you have in mind?

The purpose of my TiddlyWiki is collect information about Medicine, health, and personal development.
(All one subject from my perspective)

I have a license to practice Chinese Medicine and previously created a relational database (Filemaker) to use for my education and as a resource to use in the clinic. It was a fantastic application, which taught me many things about data and the power of computers to manipulate data. But that is a story for another day. .. . .

I am still in the process of learning about what will be possible to achieve using the TiddlyWiki tool box.
I understand the concepts behind relational data systems, but I do not know how to code.

I wish to create a hyperlinked document that combines essays, books, definitions and annotated link lists.
It will be an "organic" development, which I want to use and develop over several years time.
My dream would be to create a "Gateway" that can collate all my research,
- with Story? paths that help people to discover more about Health and Wholeness.

I like the Free Form openness of a Wiki and have been seeking a good one to use for awhile.
It could easily grow to a very large size depending on how much time I can afford to apply to research and data entry.

My thought is that I might need to create TiddlyWiki files for the individual books, and subject categories, which I can search and link from a central hub?

Currently I am creating it Locally on my own MacBook Pro.
In the future it may become a multi-user collaboration.

I have uploaded what I have thus far created to my website:

There are upper limits that I experienced in the early days with
browsers less powerful, but
I have a 2 year old tw document that i update daily that is 2001225
bytes in 2199 selected tiddlers with no big slowdowns on firefox 3.6
The tip I found on this list was to turn off animations under Options
> uncheck EnableAnimations; that really helped!

> Is it best to create several related or included files?

The nice thing is you can link to external assets with links within
the tw document or have them embedded within iframes or binary
base64.
Explore the many wonderful plugins like FileDrop plugin from places
like Eric's tiddlytools.com

> If I create several separate files is it possible to have them display
> with different colors in the Primary File?

Yes, you can create many separate tw documents each with their own
concern/area of interest and style and link them with a master tw file
like Udo's IncludePlugin http://tiddlywiki.abego-software.de/
TiddlyWiki supports custom css http://tiddlywiki.com/#CustomCssClass a
way to style in different formats ie display with different colors in
the Primary File

> What kind of issues do I need to take into consideration that I might

my advice: go slow and play, trying different things.

Search the group and tiddlywiki.org for ideas, solutions.

As for format, I found that Tiddlywiki is great because your data is
text and its yours. Not locked in the cloud or binary proprietary
format and self-contained. You can throw it in a cloud like DropBox,
TiddlySpot or a TonidoPlug computer.

it supports common format handling like csv via great plugins like
Erics http://tiddlytools.com/#CreateTiddlersFromCSV which maybe some
of that FileMaker or other database tables export to. Also great is
his ExportTiddlers plugin

> -- Don't want to discover later that I should have done things

I found after making several versions of my master that I liked over a
long time of switching different plugins that overlap in
functionality, tweaking many shadow tiddlers- ViewTemplates, toolbars,
stylesheet that simple was better for me.

Function over beauty. You can have both as you will see, but for me
the time to get something working well overrode the time for play.

TiddlyWiki is an endless TinkerToy.

I try to keep my markup simple, content having primacy and not have a
lot of functional <<macros>> in my tiddler bodies so that if I need to
parse or export the content someday, it won't be as painful or
perplexing.

The nice thing is the content is contained within pre tags in div
sections but to keep it even simpler i try to contain a thought within
a line since I'm not a programmer and the unix shell plays nice with
lines.

To further help externalize formatting out of the tiddler body, I
enjoy tobias' cycleTag plugin with Eric's SetColorCode script for a
bit of Joe's Siglet like coloring.
Again I found this stuff from the group.

Search and have fun!

Best,
tony

Jeffrey,

If your primary objective is fast and efficient management of your
research, rather than developing a TW app, you may want to consider a
topic map tool instead.

PersonalBrain: http://www.thebrain.com/

There are Free, Core and Pro Versions. Easy drag and drop files and
links to topic nodes.

Topicscape: http://www.topicscape.com/

Different visualization interface that takes getting used to, but
cheaper than PersonalBrain.

DeepaMehta: http://www.deepamehta.de/

Free, under development. Nice tool but the documentation is sparse.

There are others if you do a web search.

Good Luck,

SteveM

PersonalBrain is a fascinating program.
Does anyone have any experience with using it.
I downloaded the free trial, could be better than TW for my needs - but the $250 price tag is steep for me.
Hmmm.

Yeah, I use it the Pro Version of PersonalBrain.

Topicscape does the same thing for 100 bucks. But for me, the
interface is not as intuitive.

DeepaMehta is FREE. But you have to noodle around to figure out how
it works.

If you are in a Ph.D. program for a few years or something then the
$250 for PB is pretty cheap when amortized over time. I mean it's
just 2 more text books.

But of course it's your call.

Good Luck,

SteveM
