Preview vs sidebar: How to get decently sized side-bar?

I am trying to get started with TiddlyWiki 5. Since my notes will contain a lot of math, I have installed the KaTeX plugin, and the Preview pane really helps editing the contents.

However, I have found that I am constantly hiding and unhiding the sidebar when editing those notes:
  • When the sidebar is visible, the text-field for editing and the preview pane are both far too narrow.
  • When the sidebar is hidden, notes that are not currently being edited are far too wide.
Is there some solution to get around this? I can imagine the following options:
  1. Auto-hide the side-bar when editing a tiddler and/or when previewing is toggled.
  2. Displaying the preview in the sidebar instead of in the tiddler column.
  3. Having a hotkey for toggling the sidebar.
None of these seem to be supported out of the box.

Hi Klaus,

Can you post an image, with the sidebar and the preview pane active?

Attached is the modified show preiview button that will do what you asked. That is
- When preview is toggled on, sidebar will be toggled to hide
- When preview is toggled off, sidebar will be toggled to show

Drag and drop it to your wiki, import it, and try toggling preview

As you can see, the preview text is cramped, leading to cut-off equations in KaTeX.

Hi Klaus

You might also want to experiment with tweaking the page layout. The default layout gives the story river a fixed width, and expands the sidebar as you change the window size. In control panel you can choose “fluid-fixed” layout instead: the sidebar will have a fixed width and the story river expands to fit the remaining space.

Best wishes

Jeremy

While you can use the elegant solution by Riz, have you tried

https://tiddlywiki.com/#%24%3A%2Fthemes%2Ftiddlywiki%2Fvanilla%2Fthemetweaks
and then choose Fluid story, fixed sidebar

Thanks! Your solution does most of what I need.

Sadly, it doesn't toggle the sidebar back, when confirming an edit, leaving an overly wide view of the tiddlers.

How did you find out which Tiddler to edit? I may be able to take it from there, if I can find out which tiddler controls the "Confirm changes to this tiddler" button.

I tried the "Fluid Story, fixed sidebar" option, but it results in overly wide tiddlers, which are hard to read -- especially when they have frequent line breaks due to KaTeX equations.

Drag and drop the attached.

In general, go to advanced search, switch to filter tab and search for common terms like "button edit save".

Sincerely,
Riz

Use the right tool for the right purposes.

Klaus, I use the SideEditor for this very reason.

It is ripe for an update, but it works OK at least for me.

That plugin is pretty neat for this purpose :)

Thanks, that helped. I was able to add "disable the preview" to the behavior of the "save" button this way.
My overall setup is attached.
