G'day,

I've decided to do a short-video series of TiddlyWiki concepts relevant to what I now tentatively call the "Kiosk Gadget."

Nothing fancy, very roughly done.

To get it kick-started, I did just a short introductory video of the gadget: https://youtu.be/eaO1SUZRW0Y

I think first topic I'll cover will be just a general and extremely basic tutorial on macros.

Little general videos on each of the pertinent things in the gadget.

Then one or more little videos showing how to build the gadget from the ground up, step by step.

Something like that.

Hi,
Very well done!
The only little problem I had, was the "white noise" in the audio.
You should try to improve that.

Which microphone and recording software  did you use?

A much-needed resource, Charlie, which you seem to be approaching in a good methodical way.  Can only speak for myself, but i suspect there are many of us whose eyes glaze over when scanning a code-block chock-full of nested brackets of all sorts- curly, square, angle, round -with no idea how to quickly distinguish between macro vs widget vs filter expression vs list.  If you can give us a clue or few about how to do that, you will have delivered a great service for "the rest of us," mate.  Rock on!     /walt

That would have been me dealing with seasonal allergies and a migraine headache and in no mood to leave my comfy recliner to grab my Blue Snowball iCE.

So I just grabbed my headset, hence the very whistly esses etc.

Software?  Nah.  Just recording on my Chromebook.

I'll see if I can improve things a little, but rough/unpolished, and a little bit like a car crash may be my schtick.

I wish I had the time: can you imagine doing the videos in a "The Blair Witch Project" style from the darkness of my crawlspace?

Charlie;

This is great your initiative, a lot of new users will benefit from guided leanings, and us more experienced can benefit from looking at what you value in communicating these ideas.

Perhaps you can embed the videos in a tiddlywiki with notes and searching once you build up a library.

Some points;
  • The second video of 14 mins is not "very very short", but I expect this is the most for a short video.
  • Interesting you call it the "Kiosk Gadget" ,l see how the external sites are viewed like in a kiosk, perhaps Kiosks Gadget (plural) would be more meaningful.
  • When I saw  "Kiosk Gadget" I assumed it was a way of presenting information as if it was tiddlywiki running on a dedicated Kiosk device (Thats an Idea)
Love you work
Keep it up

Many moons ago, I used to get computer science students working with me for their co-operative education work terms.

I always thought it was great how their lack of "baked-in baggage" always turned into questions that had me doing some hard reflection about how I did things, and every once in a while they'd do things in a wonderfully disruptive way.

Well, I've got a ton of baked-in baggage, but if I can turn that into a once-in-a-blue-moon innovative bit of wonderfully disruptive mind-bender, maybe that can help keep me somewhat youthful.  Or prep me to be the mischievous senior citizen I hope to be.

Yeah, my time guesstimates for video length are brutal.  If you play the video at high-speed, though ...

Oh, I was thinking "An Information Kiosk", one place serving out a plethora of various information goodies.

Now, I'm imagining an electronic kiosk, running a small Live version of Linux (Puppy Linux !), booting up immediately to a view-only TiddlyWiki.  Beautiful idea.

Ciao cj.v...

Very interesting thread!

Just an initial comment that "Kiosk" doesn't seem the right term?
I mean IF it were working in a browser in "Kiosk Mode" yeah.
But its more like "Sidebar Reference Tool".

JUST a comment.

Best wishes

Originally, I was calling it TW Ref, as a single-purpose gadget to lookup TW documentation.

Then one of our crew (shout out to @ludwa6 !) had the great idea of including wikipedia references in there, then I stood on his shoulders and thought we could put anything at all in there, blowing up the gadget's scope big time.

"Sidebar Reference Tool" definitely perfectly fits my wordy self, however ...

"Kiosk" is the one that grabs me by the jugular in a cognitively concise way and with a soupçon of cutesy factor (stops me in my tracks for a micro-second smile).

But tastes vary, and knowing that mine can be way out there ...  Hence a single-tiddler gadget sans/sin/without getting into a plug-in setup (I may change my mind), with the idea that folk should take that "gadget" and customize exactly as per hearts' desires.  In the spirit of early-day home computing hobbyists cobbling stuff together:  make it your own!

Aside and way way out there
On the subject of tastes:  ketchup with a whole lot of garlic powder, turmeric powder, cayenne pepper, and smoked paprika.  Take your ketchup to a whole new level, baby !  (Uh, not referring to you as "baby", but more in a "holy cow" sort of way.  Unless you really want me to call you "baby".  In which case I'd need you to sign a waiver of some kind.)
