In the official list of plugins there is a bibtex plugin, but there is nothing to mention that nor any documentation in tiddlywiki.com to show there is such plugin!

It seems Jeremy himself developed it!

I appreciate if you use it and can give any feedback?

There is some suggestion to improve it!

I *think* that Jeremy intends that the Text Slicer edition is used for bibtex data now since its a general tool for XML type data?

Hi Mohammad

I hadn't noticed that the BibTeX plugin isn't documented on tw5.com beyond being available in the library; there's a few other plugins in the same state (e.g. QR Code). I'd be grateful if anyone can contribute PRs to add an entry to tw5.com under "Plugins -> OfficialPlugins" in the TOC for each of the missing plugins.

In the meantime, if you install the plugin you'll see the readme which explains what it can do.

Best wishes

Jeremy

That's the plan, but we're not quite there yet, and right now I'd recommend the BibTeX plugin for importing BibTeX files.

Best wishes

Jeremy

Hi Jeremy!

 Many thanks for your reply! Bibtex is a very useful and easy to use plugin and I recommend keep it. By the way as Diego commented it can be improved with little efforts.
For example it is good to show the title and author in text field by simple transclusion (no need to open the tiddler in edit mode to see what are the biblio data)

I have developed a find macro to be used for citation inside tiddlers and make list of references, and it works very well with bibtex as bibliography importer.

Right now many scientific sites/database export biblio data as bibtex, So, bibtex plugin will be a handy tool to import those data into TW5.

Hi there!

I just wanted to post a big THANK YOU to both of you for what you're achieving there.

I mean, of course, Jeremy, TiddlyWiki, non-linear writing and all of this.
But also Mohammad with your recent Refnotes plugin! I see clearly what you've done there... :)

It is just so amazing and at the same time not so much well-known, and it should really be!

Now I'm speaking as a PhD student, and I wanted to point that I'm very interested by any new dev around this.

I'm having difficulties for now with import of .bib, because I have a lot of noisy "{Some Ref Title Example}" around titles or characters which are not parsed like: {\'{e}} for é{\^{o}} for ô ; etc.
Also, using Mendeley, I would have liked something to convert automatically from copying a BibTeX entry (plain text copy from Mendeley) to pasting into TiddlyWiki. But I think this is kinda what's discussed in the background here, isn't it?

I think I've understood that something may be happening between :
  1. the BibTeX importer plugin : $:/plugins/tiddlywiki/bibtex
  2. the Text-Slicer plugin : https://tiddlywiki.com/editions/text-slicer/
  3. Refnotes plugin : https://kookma.github.io/Refnotes/

I'll be following up,
Thanks again, and keep up that good work!

Best,

PiT

Hi PiT,
Could you please send a sample .bib which cause such problem!

Pit,

Can you copy the result of the bib text (not the text itself) and or paste it into a simple notepad to remove special characters copy and paste that into tiddlywiki to remove special characters?

Regards
Tony

Hi Mohammad and Tony,

Mohammad, here is a sample of bib with special characters.
This BiBTeX is generated by Mendeley Desktop.
Tony, I'm not sure about what you're asking for...
Ideally, I'd like to keep those special characters and don't want to replace each of them manually, of course.

Thanks for you answers!

EDIT:  I actually kinda answered myself in fact, so sorry for bothering, Mendeley was just messing up with my export.

Well, after trying to tweak Mendeley I still have no success exporting for or importing to TiddlyWiki.
But I'm not sure if or how you can help.

So I share with you back a sample.bib with special characters "by Mendeley".

I guess I'm the only one using Mendeley with special characters bibliography, am I?

Thanks, regards

Could you please for test purpose export a .bib from sciencedirect for example

Then import in TW+Bibtex and see how it is going on!

If you use Refnotes (https://kookma.github.io/Refnotes/)
You need to have Bibtex Importer plugin installed!

Good luck

I tried with this one : https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2352580019301388

  • sciencedirect is giving this:

@article{BOUCHEREAU2019445,
title = "Éthique et temporalité en neuroréanimation",
journal = "Anesthésie & Réanimation",
volume = "5",
number = "6",
pages = "445 - 447",
year = "2019",
issn = "2352-5800",
author = "Eléonore Bouchereau and Vincent Degos",
keywords = "Pronostic neurologique, Coma, Conscience, Directive avancées, EEG, Neuro-prognostication, Coma, Consciousness, Advance directives, EEG"
}

this works!

  • then I import the same .bib inside Mendeley and export it as .bib again and it gives me this:

@article{BOUCHEREAU2019445,
author = {Bouchereau, El{\'{e}}onore and Degos, Vincent},
issn = {2352-5800},
journal = {Anesth{\'{e}}sie {\&} R{\'{e}}animation},
keywords = {Advance directives,Coma,Conscience,Consciousness,Directive avanc{\'{e}}es,EEG,Neuro-prognostication,Pronostic neurologique},
number = {6},
pages = {445--447},
title = {{{\'{E}}thique et temporalit{\'{e}} en neuror{\'{e}}animation}},
volume = {5},
year = {2019}
}

This does not works when importing through TiddlyWiki, with, of course, the BibTeX importer plugin installed!

But, is it a problem related to Mendely exporting or standards, or BibTeX importer plugin? I can't figure it out.

Here is my settings about that "escape" thing inside Mendeley, but checked or not, this does not change the exported .bib

Hey!

I usually solve this kind of stuff using regular expressions on the bib file before TW sees it! I had to use regular expressions to remov the double brackets around tittles, etc.

Thanks, this would be a way through, but a that point, one other would be to export from Mendeley, import to Zotero then export to .bib (or sync this but I really don't like how Zotero is managing libraries).

I just don't understand this mess from Mendeley, but this is not the only thing they're doing wrong...

PiT,
 I see the problem is from Mendely side! I do not use it!
 It seems Mendely uses special export setting!
 Check with Diego and see if you can find a solution!

 Sorry if I was not of enough help!

Cheers

Hi Mohammad,

I can't say I'm proud of using Mendeley... but I really need the feature or searching through my entire library and have it organized as I need.
So don't worry, you're well enough helping as it's on Mendeley'side and I realized it. But I can manage double exporting through Zotero when going for TiddlyWiki and Refnotes.

Now, I have a question I'm sure you'll be able to help. :)
Again, I'm not sure about which side this is related.

I'd like to change de citation key / tiddler's title when using <<ref xxx>>.
I'd like something like:

( bibtex-author, bibtex-year )

Should I do this before importing to TiddlyWiki with BibTeX importer plugin, through Zotero for example, or can we manage it through TiddlyWiki / and or / BibTeX importer / and or / Refnotes?

Thanks for your help, and sorry for the noob question...

Hi PiT,
 Sure, I will take a look and let you know.
If you mean ti change the format of cited reference in tiddler text
( bibtex-author, bibtex-year )

It is possible!
