Anyone got a way of saving disk space using diffs?

One of the minor annoyances of using TiddlyWiki is the proliferation of backup files that results from any editing activity. Since each backup is a full copy of the wiki, backup folders can quickly become very large, requiring a pruning strategy.

Instead of doing this, it seems like there should be a much more efficient option whereby only the diff between the current version and the previous version is saved, and a process for rolling back diffs if there is a need to access an older version.

Has anyone implemented a scheme like this? I'm guessing that something like this effect can be achieved using git, but has anyone managed to do this in an automated way, without requiring a manual commit for each save?

I keep several tiddlywikis in git, and have set-up a cronjob that
commits any changes made in the last hour. The commits are automatic.

The cronjob script is just this:

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
#!/bin/bash
set -e

cd /home/user/public_html/tiddlys/
git add .
git commit -am 'auto commit'
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
