Gaugeing interest in revitalizing (an/the) official #tiddlywiki IRC channel on the freenode network?

Hi,

while I realize the main channel of communication are the google groups, I personally also like the idea of having the option of using IRC as an additional channel for talking about TiddlyWiki.

I have been hanging out in the currently allready existing #tiddlywiki on freenode for some time now, and it does got some rare visitors, however the topic for the channel has not been updated in 7 years and could use some more current information. Unfortunately the original channel creator seems to have lost interest in the channel, and as such I approached the freenode staff, whether I (or for that matter anyone else who cares) could adopt the channel to revitalize it.

The staff on duty suggested that a project representative could get in touch with them to pronounce new moderators for the channel. As such I was wondering if Jeremy or one of the other major contributers might like to support this idea.

Currently the traffic on the channel is quite limited, but I certainly would not mind if it increased, so feel free to drop by and idle or have a chat. :)

Interestingly, the first place I went to, to look for TiddlyWiki support when I first learned about it, was IRC. I was quickly pointed to these discussion forums on Google Groups. I'm not a big IRC user myself, but many other open source projects I've been involved with over the years provide an IRC channel on Freenode as their main form of online support.

I will set up my computer to join when I boot and then see about answering questions when I am around. So count me as interested.

In what way would IRC be better than google (text) hangouts? I've never used IRC so I'm wondering, not objecting against it in any way.

By the way, apropos hangouts; I've noticed in the gmail hangout discussin feature that there seem to be many google hangout groups (i.e they've got the green spot to indicate active). I'm guessing these are "leftover groups" from the recorded hangouts, i.e that the people who participated are somehow considered a "group" that persists in the system.Does anybody know?  (...I must confess I've never dared to click on one thinking I might disturb some serious hardcore matter.)

It is mostly a matter of preference. irc has a history of use for things like this and (almost) no requirements for use so instead of needing an account from google you can just open up an in-browser client and connect. There are many more options for how to talk when using IRC and they are a bit more transparent. Google has a more consistent interface since it is all from a single group and often people are more comfortable with that, but I think that in this case irc may be a better choice.

I suppose another benefit of IRC is that people don't have to use google plus to join the discussion.
One in-browser client is https://kiwiirc.com/ click the 'try me' button, enter a nickname, click where it says FreeNode on the right and then put #tiddlywiki where it says channel, then click start to get into the group.
There generally aren't restrictions on nicknames used so don't worry about that.
