Minimum requirements for TiDB cluster?

I am building out infrastructure for a bootstrapped startup, and the recommended production specs (and even the dev/test specs) are prohibitively expensive.  Have there been practical tests on a smaller scale?  What are the minimum requirements for a functioning cluster?

The documentation is expecting a super beefy setup even for the development environment

Im also curious whats the tested bare minimum something like what is out line here in cockroachdb docs
