Cool.   We'll be fishing the current river (MO) next week in what looks like some pretty crappy weather, but I'm sure we'll have a great time.  When we return April 1st I'm hoping to hook a shad first thing!

YES!  This will be my first year fishing for Shad, I'm pumped to catch a new species.

What's the fly of choice for Shad?  I've seen Rob Snowhite posting some pictures on twitter of some really colorful streamer type things, not sure what they're called.  Anyone have a link to tying instructions for your favorite Shad fly?  Rob - do you care to share the recipe for those flies you've been tying?

Trent Jones and I put in quite a few good hours this morning upstream from Fletcher's with our two-handed rods.  Not a single bump for me.  Trent thought he felt "the tug" once but nothing more.  Fish or no fish, it was great to just get out and fling some string with a good friend and enjoy a beautiful, quiet morning on the River.  

 

We joked and chatted about how these early morning, early season meet-ups on the brink of the Shad run are as good of a way as any to mark the passage of time, and it is amazing to think another year is upon us.  Our rod guides were freezing for most of the early hours, so air temps were hovering around freezing in spite of the forecast.  We definitely saw some surface activity early just as it was getting light, and cormorants are getting pretty thick, but the water is still in the 40's so the fish are a bit sluggish.  After Trent left for work, I stayed on and hit several more good seams upstream toward Chain Bridge, but still nothing yet. 

 

I threw in the towel around 10:45AM and hiked back to Fletcher's where I checked in with Alex and Dan at the Boathouse since they are getting everything in order for the season.  I looked downstream and saw John Bilotta practicing in the lower cove with his new 15 footer and throwing some incredibly GORGEOUS loops, so we hung out a bit and caught up.  As we were finally leaving, TPFRer Ivan Sanchez was pulling in to give it a shot.  We'll look for another report on this thread soon.  It's always great to see so many friends on the River, and it has yet to even begin.  Get out there guys and gals, the switch will flip soon for sure!

I did start seeing a bunch of surface action in closer towards the
banks as the light faded. I'm assuming carp?

I made it down to Fletchers last night at low tide around 5:45 and managed to catch my first hickory shad of the year after 20 minutes at the sand bar.  It was hands down the most uncoordinated 5 minutes of my life.  Trying to land a fish at the sand bar at low tide is tricky - almost lost both my shoes in the mud. 

 

Needless to say, I'll be out there again today and might even break out the 11ft 8wt this time.

I fished upstream closer to chainbridge yesterday afternoon.  I put in about 3 hours and hadn't gotten any hits.  The gusts of 16mph winds also made it difficult to cast.  I did notice more osprey activity.  Seemed as if they too were out scouting for shad.

Hopefully the shad will be here next weekend as the temperature "should" be in the upper 50's.
