It turns out that I'll be spending some time in Destin, FL (it's near Pensacola) around Thanksgiving this year. A few quick searches have revealed some good fishing videos from that area, but I'm unsure what time of year they're all from.

I've heard that the Bull Reds begin migrating to that area around late November/early December. Can anyone confirm that? What else might we get into? And what gear would be required? 8-weights or 10-?

Also, any guide recommendations would be greatly appreciated. We'll have 2 competent fly casters and possibly up to 3 novices. But they'll probably be happy to spin fish, is that's an option.

Thanks, in advance!

Reds are a good bet in that area (nearly) any time of year, and by far my favorite fish on fly. The key to them blowing up is the surprise change in temperature where they all start feeding (random spring warmth in cool months) or when they're tied up in slots staying warm (right when cool spells hit), the latter being around Nov. and Dec.

8 weight should do you good. I've never had an issue needing more than that, and I throw a 6 at the smaller guys to make it a little wild.

Thanks for the advise. And good to hear about the rod - I been wondering whether I should take my 2-piece 10-weight or my 7-piece 8-weight...

I spent last Thanksgiving at Mexico beach, which was about 50 miles east of Destin.  The fishing was great - sea trout, ladyfish, mackeral, bluefish.  I fished out of a kayak in a protected cove and also off the beach.  I was told redfish were there, but didn't get one.  8 wt was fine for every thing I ran into, used a sinking line most of the time, but I think a floater would have worked as well.

Weather was highly variable - 32 to 72 degrees, and sun versus torential rain  depending on the day.   There are also some great freshwater bass spots within easy reach.
