I've seen several threads recently aksing about fishing in the Anacostia.  Since I live on the hill and commute through Anacostia Park everyday on my bike I thought I would go give it a try Saturday evening.  Unfortunately, this water was some of the nastiest I've encountered.  I parked across from the Navy Yard in Anacostia Park and fished along the concrete/rock wall for a ways to the right.  If the tide is out, it's easy to walk along the wall behind the trees and fish.  However, there is so much garbage it's just not worth it.  Not to mention, after about five cast my hands were sticky from something off the water.  The only positive was that it didn't smell that bad.  It's a nice area to jog or ride a bike but I won't be back to fish there.  Too many other areas nearby where I don't have to walk through garbage.

I have some friends that work at the Yard and were amazed that someone would fish in it. Apparently it stays nasty. I would be interested to know where you would fish locally and what you get into. Good luck.

The dock at the CSX bridge (where the coal spill happened years ago) has some incredibly large carp and catfish living nearby.  I've seen people fishing off that dock in the park many times, and often bringing in 30# + catfish...which they said they were going to eat.

I would not personally choose to fish the Anacostia, but even with the debris and incredible turbidity there are some big fish in there.

Too bad all that coal didn't filter out toxins in the river.

At low tide you can get a small skiff under the bridge, but at high tide it can be a tight fit (or impossible) depending upon water levels at the time and moon phase, etc.  One day back in 2011 there were some folks diving in the vicinity of the coal spill, I guess to work on something structural with the bridge itself.

I did NOT envy those poor guys, diving in that nasty, turbid water where you probably can't see 12" in front of your face much of the year.

The river is dirty and isn't for everyone.  As mentioned there are some big fish in the river.  I typically fish up at Bladensburg, there is a boat ramp, fishing pier, and a nice kayak launch.  For such an urban river there is some amazing wildlife (birds, turtles, beavers, etc).  I have seen snakeheads, gar, LM bass, shad, striped bass, catfish, and even a rainbow trout caught there.  The rainbow must have washed down the NW branch.
