There apparently were Walleye in the lake behind Savage River dam, however,
the lake was to be emptied so that repairs could start on the dam gates
about now. Reports to the Mid-Atlantic Council of Trout Unlimited (I am a
delegate to the Council) were that virtually all of the fish in the lake
would be released into the Savage River below the dam, so that there should
be an opportunity to catch fish in the river that you would normally not
see, such as walleye and smallmouth bass. The river should be cloudy, as
there is expected to be a lot of silt released with the reservoir water.
The water may remain cloudy water well into the spring, but water quality is
expected to recover by the middle of the year. The adult trout population
below the dam is expected to remain almost normal. The plan is to have two
of the four gates replaced by the time the reservoir is completely drained,
which should be by the end of this month. All four gates should be replaced
by mid-March, then refilling of the reservoir will begin - the rate at which
it fills will depend on the precipitation we receive; if there are one or
two big rain events, it could fill very quickly. MD DNR has no plans to
remove any of the reservoir fish after they come through the dam, so they
will either be caught, serve as a source of food for the larger fish in the
river, or move down into the North Branch, below Bloomington.
So, you may be able to catch walleye in the Savage below the dam, along with
other fish that you would normally not see there. Let us know if you any of
you try it out, as I have not heard any reports yet from anyone fishing up
there.
