Curious if there are any known dates of these 'runs'? I have heard of stripers and shad but do not know when/ where these are. Searches havent turned up more than just pictures unfortunately.

I found this on the Pacemaker Fishing forum:

"Gordon Leisch is a former marine biologist and VERY long time Potomac fall line (Fletcher's) angler. His logs go back 50 + years. We averaged the date of the first bite for a few species.  Based on his records they are as follows":

Blue Catfish              Year Round  20 - 40 pounders being caught now on the sandbar
Gizzard Shad            March 1 in numbers but always around
White Perch              March 15th
Hickory Shad             March 30th
River Herring             March 30th
Striped Bass (big)      April 1st
Snakeheads              Insufficient data  Usually around the 1st of April with a high water event
American Shad          April 15th

Thanks for all this information. With this and the map, I will try and get out there and see what I can hook.

"20 - 40 pounders being caught now on the sandbar" - what Sandbar is this in reference to?  Thanks

The sandbar is about 1/4 mile walk north of Fletchers Boat House on the Potomac .

I'm always looking for good spots do you have to take that trail up through the woods to get to this sand bar and I also heard about a shelf that the fly fisherman go to has anyone heard about this shelf down at Fletchers.

Hey man I fish that shelf all the time. You can park at the Chain
Bridge Maryland side (there is a pull off area on your left off cannal
run rd ) and walk to the bridge and take the steps down to the canal
trail. Right where the canal trail and the bridge meet there will be a
path towards the Potomac, follow this path the Chain Bridge. Once
you've reached the bridge that shelf will be to the left of it -
can't miss it. Also, I have gotten into some snakehead/ bass species
in the pools of water that you will pass on your right to the bridge.
Watch out for stinging nettles.

Hope this helps.
