Guide in Gatlinburg, TN

At the end of May i'm going to spend a week in a cabin in Gatlinburg, TN.  Specifically Big Buck Lodge (Black Bear falls area). Was wondering if anyone knew of a good place to hire a guide or even some good spots.  I know Smoky Mountain Angler is close.  Any one have any experience with them? Or any info on the area?

How far are you willing to drive and what type of water do you want to fish? There have to be loads of little freestone creeks holding brookies very close by in the National Park, and you have two big tailwaters within 2 hours drive. The two tailwaters are the Clinch River near Knoxville, which is mostly accessible by boat and the South Holston is up toward Bristol from there with wade and float opportunities. I don't have any personal guide recommendations for the area but a good friend recommends Teo Whitlock for the Holston, and I'm sure someone else here has floated with another guide.

If you are thinking of fishing smoky mountain national park (which is close) I would not bother with a guide.  It is pretty easy fishing and there are a number of guidebooks on the park.  If you have ever fished shenandoah it is similar fishing altough many of the streams have more browns and rainbows than brook trout. 

 

If you are interested in the park I can give you some streams to try.  I went to grad school in NC and spent a good bit of time there.  Beautiful place.  Haven't fished the tailwaters but my brother has fished the holston and said it was excellent.

Dalton - Not really wiling to drive to far on this trip.  I'm going to be down there with a bunch of family so probably won't be taking any road trips by myself.

Since you want to limit you drive, I would check out the little river and its forks (prongs) as well as the forks of the pigeon river.  If you don't mind driving, Deep creek, abrhams creek, the ocnonluftee, and very tribs are good.

Thanks for the advice bud. I think Deep creek might be doable. I'm having trouble finding the Pigeon and Little river on google maps. What are they near?  Are all these streams wade-able? Or are they really small and not worth dragging waders and boots to them?

I don't have a map in front of me but they are both in what I guess would be considered the "northwest" corner of the pak.  Neither are far from gatlinburg or townsend.  The streams I gave you are among the larger streams in the park and are around 30 feet wide or so.  I would recommned waders for them but I always wear waders.  If you decide to fish any of the tribs to those, they will be smaller and you could easily get away with wading we if you aren't worried about poison ivy or snakes.  The tribs are also where you will find brook trout while the main streams will have browns and rainbows.
