I spent a great day today up on the Yellow Breeches in Boiling Springs PA.
The fishing was great. I landed a dozen Rainbows and Browns and
lost/rolled a dozen more.
This was in the Catch and Release section just below the town of Boiling
Springs. This area is about two hours from DC.

My guide was Tom Baltz, and I highly recommend him. He put me on to
fish and coached me through the techniques of nymphing that river.
Without him, I doubt I would have caught a single fish, since the water
was stained and you couldn't see any fish. It was hot out there, but
the fish were biting.

I wish I had pictures, but I was too busy fishing.

Sounds great.  One of my favorite places to fish.  Sounds like you had a great day.  Only side comment is good guides carry cameras...shame on him for not taking a few pics.

If I had wanted pictures, I'm sure I could have gotten pictures. I've
never had the desire to take pictures of my fish.

I was actually there to learn from Tom. Whenever I start fishing a new
area, I try to get a guide. What you can learn in one day from a
person who has that much time on the local water is amazing. I've
always asked for recommendations for guides and have always had a good time.

TU's On the Rise did an episode recently featuring Tom on the Yellow Breeches.

I watched it on TV but can't find it online.

Did Tom help you with Czech nymphing?

Cheers, TSH

We nymphed, but not Czech nymphing.  Tom had a little dohicky that allowed him to put a tuft of poly yarn (about a quarter inch long) on the leader as a strike indicator and we did traditional nymphing with two beadhead nymphgs  I was introduced to tippet rings and learned a ton, but watched Tom's patience and perfection was the biggest lesson.  He made sure every piece of tackle is working correctly for every cast.  It makes sense, if the nymphs aren't floating correctly, you've a wasted cast/float.

I will have to try to find the show.

Jason,

I was up there a month ago, so conditions will have changed.
For nymphing we were going down to 5x Flouro.
These were stocked fish, but get a lot of pressure.

Nymphs were size    14 and 16.  Not terribly small.

Supposedly there will be more dry fly opportunities now then there were in June, but this is hearsay, since that was the only time I fished the Yellow-Breeches.
I can't imagine the heat has been good for fishing up there.

Good luck and let us know how you do.

Sounds awesome. I've never fished PA before, but might try to get up there this weekend. A couple questions --

What size range are the fish you're getting into up there?

When nymphing, how small are you getting with your tippet? I assume 6x-7x?

Were there fish feeding on the surface? Is the sulphur hatch still going on?

Thanks!
